Earth had almost no atmosphere when it formed 4.6 billion years ago.  Volcanic gases formed an atmosphere as Earth cooled. Hydrogen sulfide, methane, and 10–200 times more carbon dioxide than today's atmosphere were present. Earth's surface cooled  after about 500 million years, allowing water to begin collecting there.
