Earth had almost no atmosphere when it formed 4.6 billion years ago. Volcanic gases formed an atmosphere as Earth cooled. Hydrogen sulfide, methane, and 10–200 times more carbon dioxide than today's atmosphere were present. Earth's surface cooled after about 500 million years, allowing water to begin collecting there.

In this time, there was no oxygen gas on Earth. The only oxygen was found in compounds like water, this created cyanobacteria which used photosynthesis to create more oxygen which eventually integrated itself into the atmosphere.

The Carboniferous period was when there were more vegetation on Earth. Oxygen made up as much of the atmosphere as it does now. However, it was 35% of the atmosphere 350 million years ago. Plants were extremely large during this time period, with examples including Cordaites, Calamities, Medullosa, and Psaronius. Carbon dioxide levels dropped as a result of vegetation dying in swamps, making the earth cooler.

Earth was significantly warmer than it is currently throughout the most of the last 290 million years. Polar ice caps were minor or non-existent between 200 and 45 million years ago, and winters were milder all throughout the world. Many types of plants and animals lived in the arctic areas in these mild temperatures.
