Orthopaedic Surgery - Knee Replacement

Dr. Stuart Remer has participated in more than 12,000 orthopaedic surgeries. Along with many other procedures, Dr. Stuart Remer has carried out numerous joint replacement surgeries to help patients with knee arthritis.

Between the knee joint sits a buffer of cartilage. In people with arthritis, this buffer gradually degrades, resulting in motion difficulties, stiffness, and pain. Knee arthritis most often appears in people 60 years of age and older.

Knee arthritis can escalate to the extent that doctors suggest knee replacement surgery, which involves the installation of an artificial knee joint. Some forms of the surgery replace only part of the knee joint. The total knee replacement, the procedure’s most common form, replaces the whole knee joint.

During total knee replacement surgery, physicians remove the arthritic tibia and femur ends that form the natural joint. The ends are replaced with a prosthesis composed of polyethylene plastic or metal. In any event, the artificial knee joint functions smoothly, unlike the arthritic natural joint, resulting in pain relief for the majority of patients.

Joint Replacement - Knee

To train for his career, Dr. Stuart Remer completed his residency at the Albert Einstein College of Medicine and his fellowship at NYU Hospital for Joint Diseases Orthopaedic Institute. Dr. Stuart Remer has conducted thousands of orthopaedic procedures, including knee replacement surgeries, and has assessed tens of thousands of patients over a career spanning three decades.

First performed in the late 1960s, the knee joint replacement operation is a safe and effective way to address disruptive joint symptoms like pain, mobility loss, and deformity. These symptoms are especially associated with arthritis. In the United States, surgeons annually carry out knee replacements on over 600,000 patients, many of them arthritis patients.

During knee replacement surgery, patients undergo spinal or general anesthesia. Spinal anesthesia temporarily makes you not feel any pain below your waist. General anesthesia renders a patient unconscious for the course of the procedure. Surgeons gain access to the knee joint by making an incision. Surgeons then extract damaged joint tissues and replace them with prostheses usually fused to the bone using surgical cement.

Following joint replacement, physicians recommend that patients undergo physical rehabilitation to increase strength as well as mobility.

A veteran orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Stuart Remer served for 20 years as director of spine surgery at the Saint Barnabas Hospital and Health System in New York City. There, Dr. Stuart Remer also performed many total hip replacement procedures.

A total hip replacement requires the surgeon to remove the damaged femoral head and socket. In its place, the doctor introduces a prosthetic device made of a combination of metal, ceramic and polyethylene materials.

The prosthesis attaches to the femur, or upper leg bone, via a metal component known as the femoral stem. The surgeon may cement this into the bone or encourage a tight fit using manual pressure. The femoral stem connects the femur to a metal, polyethylene medical plastic structure or ceramic spherical structure, which takes the place of the natural femoral head.

The prosthesis also includes a replacement for the socket cartilage, or acetabulum. This is also typically a metal construction, and may require either cement or screws to facilitate attachment. Between the ball and socket, a liner, typically constructed of polyethylene medical plastic or ceramic supports smooth motion.
