1. Even though Andrei wanted nothing to do with the communist party he knew there was no way he could have a career without it.
2. Yes, I think he would have gotten in a lot of trouble. He could have been taken to jail or removed from the army.
3. I think freedom of speech was most important to Russians because they had been silent for so long. Finally they could really talk about issues that affected them in the past and present.
4. People weren't used tot this kind of society, it threw them off guard and wad difficult to grasp the idea of freedom because it had been so long
5. I know of a lot of events that happened when I was young but I don't remember them. I would say the shootings or terrorist attacks that have been happening.

Cartoons:
1.The first cartoon comes back to freedom of speech. The monkey(aka breshnev) is controlling what everyone perceives and is defeating anyone who lashes out. The full saying would be see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil. But of course they can't say that because you cant call the government evil
2. The trick or treat cartoon addresses how other countries ruled by the Soviet Union felt. They also wanted power and more freedom but instead were given reforms.
3.The last cartoon illistrates Gorbachev knowcking over dominos in the shape of the symbol of the Soviet Union. This shows the fall of communism

- I think that Andrei's motivation was the ability to get a job and continue a successful life.
-I think that if he had refused an invitation, the government would have tried many ways to get him to join by tricking him
- I think that the freedom of speech was maybe the most important because I feel like it allowed people to say things they wouldn't have been able to say before without punishment and maybe be more realistic
- I think it was confusing and difficult because they had not had a time like this in the past, and transitioning from the strict way you had been under for a long time to then a much less strict place could have been confusing
--------------------------------------------------------------I think that the fifth cartoon is a representation of how the economy is all over the place and how its going to be hard, but maybe how Gorbachev could slowly help getting running again
-I think that the last picture shows how Gorbachev was just trying to knock down one thing but it ended up knocking down all of communism
-I think that the sixth cartoon is displaying how everyone was asking for freedom but could only get reforms

1. He thought that joining the army would help his future career.
2. I think Andrei would have gotten in big trouble. He could have been put in prison.
3. In my opinion, I think the freedom of speech was the most important because they could have their own right of what they want to say.
4. In the past, there were regular policies but then they changed and became much more different which surprised many people.
5.
Cartoons:
1. The first cartoon is showing Brezhnev disrespecting the Soviet Union while also disrespecting the rights. The press could not see anything, the soviet citizens could hear anything bad about communism, and the dissidents (protesters) were unable to speak or be involved in anything.
The second cartoon is showing how the people in Russia did not know anything about how Americans lived. Most importantly, it shows that they vote completely different from Americans.
The sixth cartoon represents how other countries felt

1. Andrei knew that he could not progress in his career without joining it
2. Andrei probably would have been imprisoned during stalin or brezhnev's rein.
3.I think freedom of religion is the most important because religion is an extremely important part of a persons's life and it determines morals. I think freedom of speech is second most important.
4. the new policies were so different from what had been practiced in the past and it really shocked people to see the change
5. I think 9/11 would have been very memorable if I was alive then.
------------------------------------------------------------
The government is desperetly trying to fix the Russian economy which is falling apart.
The satellite states are hoping for and wanting their freedom, but all that the USSR can do is give out reforms.
Gorbachev is doing some small things which leads to the entire USSR toppling over.

They might have put him in jail if he had refused, because he was disrespecting the party.
3.I think the freedom of speech was probably most important because people could start to figure out things that they hadn't known before.
4. I think she described it as that because the society changed for the first time in a very long time. They had been in a very strict society with a lot of rules, and transitioning out of that would have been very hard.
5. I remember when osama bin laden was killed. I don't remember that much but I remember it was all over the news.
-----
1. I think the first cartoon is showing what Brezhnev was blocking. The first monkey Brezhnev is blocking the eyes of the person writing the western press, maybe meaning that the western press didn't know what was really going on in the Soviet Union. The second monkey Brezhnev is blocking the ears of the soviet people, stopping them from hearing anything from the outside. The third monkey Brezhnev is stomping on any resistance.
5. The car is representing the soviets economy. It is is shambles, and really hard to fix.

Nope
######################
CARTOONS
First Cartoon: It shows that the problems of Communism is covered up and it won't allow the truth to be set free.
Second to last Picture: it's where the other communist countries from eastern Europe are breaking away from communism and becoming themselves
LAST PICTURE: Gorbachev is described to help fix up the Soviet Union but really the Communist party believes that he is contradicting communism.

1. Andrei's main motivation for being a part of the Communist Party was to improve his chances of having a sustainable job and grow his success.
2. I think there would be some form of punishment for him to deny the job because of the disrespect of his actions towards the communist party.
3. Freedom of speech was the most appreciated right given to the people because they could live freely in education or work and discuss what they wanted to without consequences.
4. Soviets were completely new to the idea of an open society and didn't know how to react or take advantage of the new rights in the most beneficial way possible.

CARTOONS:
- In the first cartoon created in 1978, Brezhnev is represented as a monkey/gorilla like figure that is covering the eyes of the press, closing the ears of the citizens, and crushing the speaking protesters. It symbolizes how Brezhnev wanted complete control over society by completely eliminating the people's rights.
- In another cartoon created in 1989, Gorbachev is represented as a perestroika specialist (car mechanic) saying how tricky it would be to economically restructure the Soviet Union.

The most important freedom that the Russians received was having the freedom of choice. for example the choice of religion and the choice of what to say.
4. I think she called it a confusing time because everything was so different and everyone wasn't used to this kind of society. Everything was evolving and changing constantly and very different than before.
**************************************
Interpretations:
in the first photo its showing that Communism was meant to be kept covered up and keep communism the way it is. Not allowing speech that goes against communism.
in the fourth photo it shows how much control the leaders had over the protesters

I think if he had said no, he would have to deal with bad consequences from the communist party leader like going to jail.

3. I think the most important one is freedom of speech because it allows other voices to be heard that might help improve their society and gives people a different perspective on the situation.

4. I think the woman called it a difficult and confusing time because it was a big step for their society.

_____________________________________

I think the second cartoon is really powerful because it shows how they have no control or say in their society.

the 5th cartoon shows how complicated and confused people(Gorbachev) are about the soviet economy. It seems very unorganized and people don't understand or know what's going on with their economy. I think if he denied, he would get into some situations that would not be good for his success. He could get arrested, killed, threatened, etc.
3. Freedom of Speech was most important because it allowed people to communicate in a more successful way.
In the 1982 poem, it is talking about how they needed a young leader with good ideas but then they say, "but one of us will have to do." Is this saying that the monkey/Bresnev wasn't a very good leader or wasn't actually what they were looking for.

In the 1980 poem I think it is trying to portray how only certain people got to vote, higher people. They way this by showing us two poor ladies sweeping the street and one asks, what is a voting booth.

Andrei would have been in great trouble, most likely killed or jailed, for refusing to join the army under Stalin or Brezhnev.
3. I believe that the freedom of speech was most important because it created understanding between members of society and expression helped improve society.
4. I think she calls it this because although the laws had changed, there was still a stigma in society about what was truly acceptable.
CARTOONS:
1. The big people are all the same: society hasn't changed, press's eyes are covered, soviet citizens can not know about anything, protesters are eliminated
2. one person works while the other does not but they are treated equal: communism, "what's a voting booth": soviet citizens are not aware of the rest of the world
3. they are all the same, not looking for change
4. Andrei was motivated by what he thought communism would do to further his career.
2. I think that Andrei would put himself in danger if he had not chose to join the Communism party. He could have been arrested or something worse could have happened.
3. I think that the freedom of speech benefitted and was more appreciated to the people because without that new freedom many people would not have been able to tell people what was really happening or how they felt in their own society.
5. Memorial Day is the holiday that I really love.
__________________________________
1. My interpretation of cartoon two is showing that citizens in Russia were not educated about how Americans lived and worked and their way of beings , especially the way that they voted was significantly different from Americans.
2. Cartoon five is showing that maybe the Soviet Economy was very poor and had no way of functioning, like a car in this case. I think that the cartoon is showing the reason that the Soviet economy was doing so poorly was because of one person and that person was Gorbachev. I also think that maybe Gorbachev is trying to put the car back which is representing how he tried to put Soviets' economy back together because it was broken.

Andrei wanted to join the army was a way to gain respect and dignity in his country/ society.
2. if he refused to be in the army during stalin's reign he would definitely be killed for not obeying the laws and acting as a threat/ influence to other people.
3. I think the most important was freedom of speech, because with that new freedom, there would be several riots and newspaper articles describing what their society was really like the the public.
4. She most likely called it confusing because of all the change and difficulties her countries was being exposed to at such a short notice.
5. The Boston Marathon was extremely memorable to me because I remember having a friend thats dad was in the race and almost was injured/ possibly could have died. Also all the different school shootings (Sandy hill elementary) this one especially because it was the first school shooting I ever was aware about.

Cartoons

1. I chose the 1st cartoon because it is showing how B is a monkey or even doing "monkey business"
2. I also chose the 2nd picture because it shows how unaware the people are of their surroundings and throughout the world.
3. The last picture of the domino affect represents the person kicking the domino (a leader or higher ranked leader) kicking the soviet union down and starting a domino affect whether that be in the whole world or just the soviet union's economy.

But they seemed to like him, so maybe they would persuade him.
3. Andrei talked about being able to refuse the invitation, so I think the freedom of expression, feelings, and speech.
4. People were probably confused on what they could do with the new laws.
---------------------------------------------------------
1) I think the cartoon with the monkey Brezhnev's correlates to the limited rights everyone had. The press could not see anything to write about, the citizens could not hear anything bad about communism, and the dissidents were unable to speak or move. The monkey is bigger similar to a gorilla and holds the most power.

2) Gorbachev is the mechanic for the car which represents the Soviet's economy.

1) I think the first cartoon shows how Brezhnev is powerful and in charge. He is way bigger than the other people and hovering over them, watching their every move. He is covering the eyes of someone holding a Western press sign to show how he won't let them see what is happening in the Soviet. He is plugging the ears of the Soviet citizens to show how he isolates them and doesn't let them hear the press and bad comments about Communism. Also, he is standing on top of protestors showing how he punishes them.
2) I think the second cartoon shows how clueless and isolated the Soviets are. The man is making fun of the Americans and the women has no clue what he is talking about. Also, there is someone looking through a wall to show how the Communist are always watching, so you better watch what you say.
3) The last one with dominos show how Gorbachev is destroying Communism.
