Sometimes dictating for students can help when they feel overwhelmed by a writing task. Let them share verbally using language that they've honed while you write down what their ideas (be careful not to correct errors as you dictate).

When reading stories I like to get bilingual books so ELL students can hear the story in their native language. Fairytale bilingual books are the best!

I encourage ELL students to play online games in their native language. This resource is only for Spanish-speaking learners however there are more out there!

Something I do, and that the training video confirmed as a good idea, is really celebrating the students ability to speak multiple languages and having signage and directions available for them in their most comfortable language. I also liked that the presented spoke about highlighting cognates. I know as a language learner myself it feels so good when some words are easier to recognize.

One thing I have found helpful when teaching ELLs is learning a couple words or phrases in their native language. While this is a lot easier with one or two native languages in classroom rather than 5+, I've found it builds a connection, and builds student motivation. If my teacher can learn some of my language, I can learn some of theirs.
