She describes her dad as quiet and spending a lot of time on his laptop. This shows he’s dealing with sadness and feels a bit alone, different from how her mom handles her own depression.

Candice also mentions that her dad has a bad relationship with his brother, Rich Uncle Brian, because of a family fight about a software patent. This causes tension in the family, and Candice tries to fix things.

Through Candice’s view, we see that her dad struggles emotionally and this affects the whole family.

After the death of Frances, Vicky went to a deep depression, thinking and visiting her for years and not overcoming the fact that she is gone. In chapter 'M for Mourning', she gets annoyed at Candice's constant yapping leading to Vicky throwing a teapot. This tells us that she can get easily enraged as a reaction as her mental health decreases.

Rich Uncle Brian and Candice have a strong relationship between each other. He likes to buy Candice nice and expensive gifts that she doesn’t use at all. Sometimes, she has been invited to his yacht, but she doesn’t go until one day. She went to the yacht and Rich uncle Brian greeted her like she is a celebrity. She has seasickness and RUB takes care of her like that she is his daughter. He likes to take her to carnivals to have fun and spend time with him. When she has problems, she goes to Rich Uncle Brian to solve her problems. For example, she went on the motherboard for a bike in return because she needed it because she had to go to Douglas because she can go on her own instead going in the car.

Dad:

Rich Uncle Brian and Candice’s dad have beef, meaning they have a bad relationship with each other. They are both brothers at the start, but after they were finished with the project, RUB back stabbed him and took all the money and left him with nothing. Ever since that day, Rub and Candice’s dad (James) have no longer talked with each other. When it is Candice’s birthday, he comes with expensive gifts for her. When it is his birthday, he probably comes empty handed.

"You sailed into this world on a sea of love. You cruised through calm waters and berthed... And there my sweet mariner you remain. Docked in love." (pg. 14). This suggests that he thinks that Candice's birth is a beautiful thing. When he said "docked in love" it shows tenderness and affection. Rich Uncle Brian is a thoughtful and poetic person and he sees Candice as precious.

"At one time, Rich Uncle Brain was just Uncle Brian. But then he became rich and bought a Yacht. Since then he would often use nautical imagery..."

It is stated that the reason Rich Uncle Brian and Dad are not on speaking terms because they both think the idea as their own. Dad has his own way to react to this and so does Rich Uncle Brain. Dad mutters darkly whenever Rich Uncle Brain is mentioned and still does even when he isn't. He seems to have a strong disdain towards his brother. This is shown when Rich Uncle Brian asks Candice if Dad still loves him, Candice says,

" No, whenever your name is mentioned his mouth twists up and he mutters darkly." - page 81

However when Candice asked Rich Uncle Brian if he still loves his brother, he said,

"I do pumpkin. I surely do." - page 80

This shows that he still loves his brother and cares for him. Rich Uncle Brian always seems like he is on edge and this feud between his brother might be the reason. Although he is wealthy, his wealth does not benefit him emotionally and might add to his guilt of having all the share and his brother has none even though he believes the idea is his. His many nervous habits that add to his on edge character are,

"Rich Uncle Brian sighed." - page 71

These are nervous habits as backed up by

" Rich Uncle Brian does that a lot, it's a nervous habit" - page 13

" He does that a lot as well" - page 14

"He does this a lot when we talk."

These actions also raise the suspicion that he his hiding something.
