Front Cover

The masthead on this front cover is is in the font Bodoni Antiqua Compress D Regular, which is their 'go to' font for their logo. This makes it recognisable to people all over the World. The font itself is strong but elegant, which connotes the readers of ELLE and how every female should feel about themselves. The masthead is in white, which makes it contrast well against the darker background. I think this was done to allow the page to look classy and not interrupt the main striking image. Again, this is probably why most of the masthead is cut out behind the model. I think this is a good idea because if it was on top of the women then you wouldn't see her beautiful features.

The main image is a close up shot of a famous model and actress Margot Robbie. Instantly, this will attract people that follow her and enjoy her movies, especially ELLE's primary target audience. She is looking towards the camera in the romantic pose. This means she is looking confidently and sexually towards the camera, with her lips apart. This pose is only hinting availability, therefore is quite a popular pose for front covers. This can attract the target audience as they may want to feel as sexy as she does, therefore they might buy the magazine , hoping that inside has some tips. Rosie's hair and makeup is done noticeably, but it is not in your face and is quite subtle. I think this adds a sense of beauty to the page, as she looks rather striking. By only adding a little bit of curl in her hair and a little touch of colour on her lips, is promoting to viewers that you don't have to go over the top to feel and look beautiful. She has a gold bra-let on with a baggy blue T- shirt over the top. This adds a sense of being relaxed to the image and her natural beauty shines through. The lighting is also quite bright, which portrays a sense of positivity.

The main cover line is "What hot girls know... our wild ride with Margot Robbie". This is large and bold because it is connecting with the main image. Its font is san serif, which is really formal, but somehow connects with the relaxed feel of this cover. The most important words are larger than the others, this is to get the readers attention. Since the caption is "What hot girls know", they may be intrigued by this if they don't have much self esteem, it will make them wonder what hot girls know compared to themselves. This also provides self confidence, because inside the article may provide them with things they already know, and then the magazine is basically implying they are 'hot'.

The other cover lines are similar when getting the readers attention, but are a little bit smaller in size. This is so the main coverline attracts the audience, and once they are intrigued they can look at the other interesting cover lines. Some are in the colour yellow so they also attract the audience. I think this colour was used to continue with the warm feel.

The left third, which is the part of the magazine that is shown when stacked in a shop with other magazines, includes the beginning of the masthead and the most interesting cover lines, this is to attract the audience to the most interesting stories and put them at a better advantage of being bought. For this magazine, they have inviting cover lines such as "Top 24 Style Secrets" and shows the name Margot Robbie. Therefore, if the reader can't see the main image of the model/ actress they will still know she is featured inside.

The rule of thirds is also demonstrated on this cover, and shows the main focus point, Margot's head attracting viewers in.

There isn't a barcode shown on this cover, but there is the issue date. This is in the colour yellow, so again stands out from the background. The issue month will allow keen readers to keep track of what issue they are on.

Introduction

The title ELLE means She when translated in French. This represents the magazine brilliantly as it is specifically aimed at young women. It costs £3.80 per issue, and being a monthly publication, there are 12 issues per year. This allows every month the issue to be full of strong news and information. In the first half of 2010, ELLE UK had 195, 625 issues in circulation and then their website was created in late November 2010 as the growth of the magazine increased.

ELLE's primary audience is young women aged 16-30, interested in the latest fashion and beauty trends. The advertisements in the magazine are generally fashion and beauty brands promoting latest products or fashion lines aimed at females, so the reader would have to be earning money with disposable income to purchase any of the products. Articles in the magazine focus generally on appearance, with topic ranging from exercise workouts to the must have trends.

Contents Page

The masthead on this contents page is exactly the same as the front cover, this is to add consistency throughout the magazine, and creates a professional feel. It is positioned in the top left of the page, which is the first thing you read when coming onto the page. The colour is black, which is the normal colour for the logo, even thought the masthead on the front is a different one, this is only to follow suit with the colour scheme, but everywhere else ELLE is always in black.

There are many images on the page, which creates a lot of content for the reader to take in. Some are larger than others and emphasising different topics, for example the model on the left looks as though she has quite unique makeup on, this could suggest an article involving the makeup she has on. All of the images are anchored, which makes it easier for the audience to see what page that article is on. The images are positioned quite like a collage, which adds a sense of girlieness to the page, as collaging would tend to be something that we would do when we were younger with magazines.

The font on the page is striking and easily read. There are sub- headings with details of all the different topics in the magazine. Such as Features, which is in capital letters and in the colour red. This allows the reader to easily spot out a section they are particularly interested in viewing. The page numbers below are also quite large, but are in a thin font, which makes it look sophisticated. A quality women always want to have. Again, the article headline is in the same bright red colour and font, creating synergy throughout the page. The description of the article is positioned below this, so it is simple for the reader to follow. The writing looks like a serif font, as the edges of the letters are curvy, which adds an elegant touch to the page.

The page is a mix of being image led and text read. There are quite a few images behind the text, but the text does take up a lot of the middle of the page. This is effective as there is a lot of information to go on one page, but the pictures make it look a bit more interesting.

The text is not that clear enough to see if there is any linguistic features, but I am presuming there will be rhetorical questions, alliteration and assonance.

There is a page number on the bottom left hand side. This allows the readers to know what page they are on and gives some indication of how far the need to go ahead to look for a specific page they may need.

Double Page Spread

The colour scheme on this double page spread is in black and white, I think this is really effective as it makes the image more powerful and connotes the dominant female. This page is definitely image- led, which means the photo takes up a lot of the space, and is the main focus, I think this is a good idea, as it really accentuates the beauty of the artist.

The layout is again simple, yet effective. There is only one column used, which makes the viewer think there isn't an awful lot to read through. The headline is placed in the top left of the page, as this allows the image to take up most of the space. The font is serif and again simple, which adds a dramatic and important feel to the page. There is a smaller description below the headline, which allows the reader to have a brief insight on what the article is about.

The image used, is a close up of the artist Adele. She is a World wide phenomenon and very popular, which may attract more readers into looking at this page. Her makeup is bold on the eyes, and then really simplistic, I think this is a great message to younger readers, to let them know you don't have to go over the top with makeup to feel and look beautiful. Sometimes less is more. There are no objects used, I think this is to follow the simplistic vibe. Furthermore, the artist is known for powerful ballads and always being herself, she is not similar to other pop artists that use bright lighting and performance costumes, therefore this house theme really fits in well with the artist.

I cannot read the text, but I am presuming language such as correct punctuation, alliteration and humour will be used to keep the reader interested.
