Each time the father traveled for business, he brought each girl a gift. While the two sisters always asked for expensive things, Cenerentola never did. One day she asked for a bird. On his journey, the father met a King and was invited to bring his daughters to three balls. Cenerentola told her family that she did not wish to go; however, each night she asked her bird to transform her into the most beautiful woman, so that she could go to the ball. She caught the eye of the king, but each night she slipped away. The third night she left behind a shoe and the King's servants were able to identify her. In Perrault's version of the story, Cinderella is hated by her two step-sisters and her step-mother; however, in the Italian version, her father is raising her along with her biological sisters. Cenerentola is loved by her father and sisters, rather than hated. In each version the protagonist is loving and kind. The Italian version also does not include a fairy godmother. Instead, it is Cenerentola's bird that transforms her. She attends three balls, as compared to Cinderella's one.
