I really think we need to buckle down on the expectation that school is a place to learn. I think we spend too much time on the parties and play time. There needs to be a smoother transition in elementary that by the time they hit 5th grade. It’s ok to have occasional part or break, and they probably are doing a good job of getting serious content in, but we’ve spent too much time developing the expectation that they need to always be entertained.

Good, quality teachers who stay in the role for the long haul. Teachers are the backbone of education, yet they're often overworked. If we want to keep great educators in the classroom, we need to start by paying them what they're worth - competitive salaries that reflect their expertise and the critical role they play in shaping the future. We also need to take care of teachers because they're the ones who take care of students. You can't pour from an empty cup, and when teachers are burnt out or strectched too thin, it's the students who ultimately fell the impact. By reducing workloads, funding classrooms properly, and supporting teachers' well-being, we ensure they have what they need to pour into their students every day. When we invest in teachers, we invest in students.

One of the biggest issues I believe we should be adocating for is life skills teaching/classes. As teachers, we are limited to the standards that must be taught for our subject area. To go outside the realms of this would be challenging and almost impossible with the amount of standars we haveto cover throughtout the year. We are losing student engagement and their motivation to learn because they are not interested in the curriculum we are teaching. This is seen more in the older students, because the curriculum gets more challenging. As a teacher, I want my students to enjoy my class and I want to teach them skills that will benefit them in the future. I have to try and create activities that will get my students to "buy in" but even then I don't every student participating. I try my best to find a reason why my students would need the math I'm teaching them for future use, but I can honestly say I have a lot of curriculum that I have no idea what my students would ever use it for in the future.

I feel like for public education, it would be funding. I think about our SDI groups and how much the students would benefit if the middle school could have an SDI teacher per grade level (and the high school). If we were able to have an additional teacher for each grade, the class sizes would be so much smaller The teacher to student ratio would be significantly less if we were able to have more educators in the building, which in turn would reduce student behavior. It could also reduce absenteeism because the smaller student to teacher ratio would allow teachers to build better relationships with the students, usually resulting in better attendance.
