The original Taming of the Shrew taming scenes are similar to the taming scenes of 10 Things I Hate About You because Katherine and Petruchio similarly line up with Kat and Patrick. Both characters are young adults, Kat is rebellious, Patrick is an outcast, and both are not looking for love. I chose to base my interpretation and analyzation from these two versions because there are many similarities and differences, even though both films are decades apart from each other. The director of 10 Things was trying to portray this movie as something teens can easily relate to. In this movie, Kat was not forced into a relationship, but Patrick was because of the incentive Joey gave him. This interested me because it seemed the director switched the traditional roles of the two, but Patrick was still the one that ended up falling in love first. Kat is still as rebellious and untame as she is in the original, but with more of a modern day twist. She doesn't go to parties, doesn't have many friends, is not interested in a relationship (especially in high school) and doesn't care what about how her peers perceive her. This is what separates Kat from Katherine in the original play, because Katherine is under the pressure from her royal family to be married. Kat from 10 Things doesn't have as much pressure to date, because she refuses to follow demands that others tell her. Another aspect that separates these two films is the way Katherine is treated by Petruchio, and the way Kat is treated by Patrick. Petruchio is more hands-on with Katherine, we see him pushing her around or dragging her with him, even chasing her so he can have her all to himself. Patrick is more of a laid back version of Petruchio, because at first he doesn't even want Kat, he is only in it for the money. Patrick isn't crazy about getting Kat's attention in the beginning, but as the movie progresses we see him becoming more and more interested.

The Message of the Taming Scenes

The message of the taming scenes in Taming of the Shrew, is that a woman does not need to rely on a man for support and happiness. This is prevalent in Taming of the Shrew and 10 Things I Hate About You, because Katherine does not view a man as a necessity, which is why she is labeled a "shrew". Petruchio is always chasing after Katherine and trying to tame her, in a specific scene from 10 Things I Hate About You, Patrick confesses his love and tries to kiss Kat after she finds out he only dated her because of a bet. She pushes him away and he tries to get her to come back, but she ignores him and runs away. Another specific scene from that movie is when Bianca, Kat's own sister, is frustrated with Kat because she isn't allowed to date until Kat does. She asks her why she can't just be a "normal" sister and date someone, but of course Kat refuses to be tamed. Kat's Character was meant to be a representation of what Katherine would have been like if she was a rebellious teen in the 90's. Kat is the definition of untamable, and gets the message across that she doesn't need a man to be fulfilled. She is content with living in her own world without any distractions.
