"Am I getting nobler, better, more helpful, more humble, as I get older? Am I exhibiting the life that men take knowledge of as having been with Jesus, or am I getting more self-assertive, more deliberately determined to have my own way? It is a great thing to tell yourself the truth."
- Oswald Chambers, The Place of Help

Throughout Kant's definition of enlightenment, he emphasizes man's process of seeking to arrive at truth and not immediately accepting everything he hears as truth. Man can only gain truth through Christ. So despite Kant's claim that it is human responsibility to seek truth, in addition it is necessary to pursue God in order to have truth revealed.

"Man is nothing but what he makes of himself."
- Jean Paul Sartre

This image perfectly depicts Sartre's belief as an atheist existentialist that existence precedes essence; for example, man can exist once he is physically born, but he must determine himself and define his purpose in order to have essence. From a Christian existentialist perspective, essence can precede existence, because before man is born, his essence existed in the sense that God knew where he would fit into His plan.

Kierkegaard's discussion of man's desire of money brings up the question, how does an increased desire for money correspond to indolence? In addition, is money feeding dreams and actions or laziness?

According to Fortune, Bill and Melinda Gates foundation donated $210 million to the University of Washington in Seattle and 100,000 chickens to sub-Saharan Africans living in extreme poverty. More money means more conveniences and less physical action; therefore, Bill and Melinda's donation could be viewed as fueling society's indolence. However, it is important to recognize that charities need both time and money donations to strive. A donation is not necessarily an excuse to not serve, but an alternative way to serve than physically participating in the organization.

Darwin disagrees with how the weaker elements of society are propped up rather than letting natural selection take place. He would argue that survival of the fittest should be implemented. Obamacare, or the Affordable Care Act, is partially designed to make healthcare easier to attain for those who cannot afford it; this is a direct example of the United States supporting the weaker members of the population instead of letting natural selection take place. At 2:09, the government official states, "we had to institute this policy because some people needed coffee, whether they could pay for it or not, and it had to be provided to them. This placed an undue burden on everyone else." Darwin's idea of survival of the fittest would decrease the total population and eliminate this "undue burden"; however, allowing the weak members of society to struggle on their own is against the accepted morals of the overall American population.

"What can be more foolish than to think that all this rare fabric of heaven and earth could come by chance, when all the skill of art is not able to make an oyster." -- Jeremy Taylor, Church of England cleric

Throughout Freud's writings, he expresses his view that society and religion are ways man attempts to feel in control. He also offers prayer and sacrifice as examples of attempts to manipulate God and control nature. Freud believes the institution of religion was developed out of fear to justify what happens in life. Man used creativity to develop the concept of a "father figure" to protect him no matter what.

However, if money-making is my priority, then religion will inevitably become a tool to gain wealth." -- Stephen R. Karcher, St. Anthony Greek Orthodox Church presiding priest

Weber's analysis of a capitalist society leads rise to the question, "Is it wrong for a Christian to accumulate wealth?" Weber bashes the Protestants for not being otherworldly and claims they are putting money over God. Each language has its own designated words to describe specific objects, situations, etc. Translating from one language to another causes context and content to be lost over time. If "blue" was truth there would be no need for another translation. Is there "truth" or is that just another word man made up? An example of this in today's society in the American Psychiatric Association using diagnosis to stigmatize people. Is mental illness a myth that is being used for power and control? At what point does a disorder become a norm? Mental illnesses have been legitimized but at what cost?
Lyotard encourages his readers to reject absolute truth and the idea of metanarrative, and to revolt against preestablished rules.

It is impossible to grasp the extent of God, because He is so powerful. There can be many right views without man having a complete view.
What about the physical image of God? How are we made in His image, and to what extent? Did we ruin or distort this image with sin? Adam and Eve were immortal and at one time in a perfect relationship with God. Humans are the only ones that can have a restored relationship. Christianity is the only religion where God came down to save man; man did not have to work his way up to reach Him.
