Brently Mallard, Mrs. Mallard's husband, had just died. Her family knew Mrs. Mallard had a heart problem, so her sister and her husband's friend, Richard, tried to break the news to her as gently as possible. After finding out that her husband was dead she wept with sudden wild abandonment and went straight to her room and allowed no one to follow her. As everyone thought she was sad, in reality she felt free and released for captivity as she continued repeating "Free! Free! Free! Body and soul free!". She fanatasized about her life ahead and hopes she lives a long lasting life to appreaciate her liberty from her husband. Her sister, Josephine, had been listening to her with her ear to the door. Josephine begged Mrs. Mallard to open the door as she thought she was becoming ill. Mrs. Mallard opens the door, and she and her sister start going downstairs. Richard was standing and waiting at the bottom of the stairs. The front door unexpectedly opens, and Brently, Mrs. Mallard's husband, enters the house. He had not died from an accident and didn't even know there was one. Richard tries to obstruct Mrs. Mallard from seeing him, but he fails. The doctors arrived, and they declared Mrs. Mallard died from a heart attack brought from pleasure. "--of the the joy that kills."
