Phonetics vs. phonology

Both are branches of linguistics, however,

phonetics deals with (studies) the physical production of speech sounds of a given language, and how these sounds are articulated, transmitted and received.

Phonology, on the other hand,(to put it mildly) studies the sound patterns that occur within languages.

We don't need to worry about phonology here, hell, we're not even going to cover everything that phonetics has to offer, we're going to learn the more practical part of phonetics, so let's go step by step:

Phonetics has its own branches, these are: 
-Articulatory phonetics (production)
-Auditory phonetics (reception)
-Acoustic phonetics (nature of the sounds)

Articulatory phonetics

To learn phonetics is to learn the basis of any spoken language.

No, but seriously, learning phonetics may seem really confusing and overwhelming at first, believe me, I've been there, but it's really just practice and it is worth it. Since we'll be using the symbols provided by the IPA (although not every symbol) if you take the time, you'll be able to know how to properly pronounce any word of a spoken language just by looking it up.

We are going to practice and use BBC Pronunciation (also referred to as "Received Pronunciation" or RP)

Why is that?

Well, this accent is considered to be the standard (British) English accent, that means:
-It is understood everywhere English is spoken
-It is very formal
-It is clear, without regional mixtures
-It is widely used in the media and public figures
