This statement contradicts itself because it is saying that dead people continue to live, therefore this is a paradox. The author uses this paradox to try and tell us that the dead do not literally continue to live but they live through the people who are still alive in ways like memories or legacies.

This shows significance in the story because it talks about a general small prairie town before going into more detail talking about this small towns importance on an individual’s life. It matches the simplicity of the town in the line and symbolizes how an outsider or stranger to the town may view it. It also emphasizes this by going into more detail about the town. This is showing how a resident of the town may view it.

In the beginning it says “Despairs like multitudinous pits of isolated hells” which compares being sad to being in hell. The next simile says “When you saw the northern lights flaring across the sky like the scrawled signature of God” which compares the northern lights to God, who can change what the sky can do in an instant (if you believe in that sort of thing).
