4th page quote "everyone in the town knew him, but no one new him" is a example of a contradictory sentence because the second statement contradicts the first. This perodox helps add to the character of the already unusual man who was also classified as a "lumbering bewildered bear".

At the beginning of the story, she was explaining her personal experience from the place. She would talk about the different seasons and events that happened there. Then, there was an all of a sudden change in tone, she became really angry and how she thinks our country is dull and she talked about what made her angry. She also explains her own experiences.

-Ben, Sahaj, Karina, Hailie

It shows how to an outsider that the town looks dark and lifeless, but once you get to understand what the towns truly like it shows how exciting it could be.

The tone at the beginning was established using juxtaposition, showing a mixed of emotions when she said “jubilation and mourning”. She was trying to bring suspense as well as show how an individuals opinion on events and memories change when they’re older. She didn’t like where she was living and thought she didn’t like her childhood, however, by the end She found the importance of her childhood memories and how they are part of her.

The author uses this paradox to try and tell us that the dead do not literally continue to live but they live through the people who are still alive in ways like memories or legacies.

“It was, in fact, a small prairie town.”

This particular sentence is singled out in its own line. This shows significance in the story because it talks about a general small prairie town before going into more detail talking about this small towns importance on an individual’s life. It matches the simplicity of the town in the line and symbolizes how an outsider or stranger to the town may view it. It also emphasizes this by going into more detail about the town. This is showing how a resident of the town may view it.

There are a few similes in this story. In the beginning it says “Despairs like multitudinous pits of isolated hells” which compares being sad to being in hell. The next simile says “When you saw the northern lights flaring across the sky like the scrawled signature of God” which compares the northern lights to God, who can change what the sky can do in an instant (if you believe in that sort of thing). Then “The drought and depression were like evil deities which had been there always” which compares haunted spirits to the sadness we experience in the world, saying that they always stay with us.
