The Author, Dan Santat, uses the technique of Primary, Secondary, and Neutral colors to invoke the emotions of Beekle. The mixture of dark blue and dark green, with some white, helps bring the sky and characters alive. The illustrations contain straight lines, and the characters give off realistic features. The illusion of each imaginary friend being chosen kind of resembles a UFO vacuuming them up.

The story is not based on any specific source. Its narrative is fictional and loosely based on the author's challenges as a father. The style is more realistic than cartoonish. The lines used to create the trees are swirly and straight. The children resemble actual children; they are not stick figures, nor do they have lines to make up their facial expressions.

The overall theme of this story is that Beekle is trying to find his human person, Alice. He takes it upon himself to leave the Imaginary Island on his own to search for them. As he travels the human world, he notices the different interactions between adults and children. Also, it is noted that as Beekle travels, we can see him becoming smaller when viewing the non-magical world.

(Pg. 31 & 32). The best way the author represented children in the story was by writing from the Imaginary friend's point of view. Santat and Caplan captured how each chosen Unimaginary friend resembled what younger children are interested in. For example, there were dragons, cats, and bears. Beekle is a figure who is finally paired with his person, and together they represent those children who are always left out of the equation and made to do things for themselves.

The age range for The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend is three and up. The book is written from the perspective of Beekle. However, according to Sentat, it can be seen as a metaphor for how he views fatherhood. As stated earlier, Beekle and Alice have always felt like background characters in both worlds.

The majority of the illustrations in The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend were created digitally. Santat & Caplan's portrayal of light and dark colors, such as yellow, blue, white, black, and gray, helped convey Beekle's thoughts as he visited the Human world. At the beginning of the book, we can see dark blues as the imaginary cat friend is being beamed up to the human world. Several pages later, the use of brown and gray is used to show the sadness Beekle felt as he sits upon the tree with the other children. Santat's characters features were realistic. The lines used were straight, curvy, and triangular. For instance, Beekle's teeth resembles triangles.

Dan Santat chose to create The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend with mixed media (digital & traditional art). The style is not action-oriented, yet based in isolation because of how Beekle is shown alone and looking in from the outside in the majority of the story.

The Adventures of Beekle: The Unimaginary Friend is a fantastic book that was intriguing to read and dissect. I believe that children under the age of 8 years old will enjoy this book because it is very colorful, and it could help spark conversation amongst them and their peers about how hard it feels to make friends.
