  • Make sure your work groups and teams have both boys and girls in them. Not only does this make your team stronger, but it also contributes to gender equality.
  • Empower the girls and women in your life. Congratulate your friends and relatives on their personal accomplishments and support them in achieving their goals.
  • Have discussions about gender stereotypes. Talk to your friends and parents when you watch videos that show what’s “typical” for a girl or boy and discuss how this contributes to gender equality or inequality.
  • Encourage girls and women to speak up. If you notice that females in your class or work groups are not talking, or that the males are talking the most, ask the females for their opinions and encourage them to join the discussion.

  • Take short showers. Stay in the shower just long enough to soap and rinse yourself off well.
  • Free the bugs you find in your house outside. Flushing unwanted insects down the toilet is an easy solution to a pest problem but a quick way to waste water.
  • Use tap water wisely. Try not to keep tap water running when you don’t need it, like when you’re brushing your teeth.
  • Eat less meat. Raising animals requires more water, among other resources, than growing and harvesting plants. This one may be hard, but it will reduce your carbon footprint!
  • Make sure faucets and showerheads are never leaking.

  • Unplug phones, computers, and appliances when they are charged or when you are not using them.
  • Drink from a reusable water bottle to save energy that would be used on producing single use plastic bottles.
  • Ask your teacher about ways they can make the classroom more energy efficient. For example, switching off the lights after class and adjusting the thermostat, lower in winter, higher in summer. 
  • Air dry. Let your hair and clothes dry naturally instead of running a machine. 
  • Talk to your parents about replacing old appliances with energy efficient models and light bulbs at home.

    Let's take a closer look at SDG 15: Life on Land again. Biodiversity destruction is a crisis for the whole planet. Forests cover over 30% of the land of the Earth, and they are a habitat for more than 50% of the land based plants and animals. However, these rich ecosystems are being destroyed at a fast rate, with hundreds of species of plants and animals going extinct each year. That is why we need to protect our land biodiversity now more than ever. Without it, we wouldn’t exist.
     
    We need to act fast to reduce the loss of natural habitats. Here are some ideas to get you started:

    • Volunteer for cleanups in your community, local parks, and forests
    • Compost your food to reduce waste production and recycle nutrients 
    • Reduce your use of paper by printing less
    • Choose reusable over single-use items
    • Educate your family and friends on land preservation
    • Be part of animal protection organizations and help to restore biodiversity

    Let's take a closer look at SDG16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions: war and conflict are some of the greatest threats to our society. Approximately 28.5 million primary school age children like you are out of school because they live in conflict-affected areas. Many families are afraid of losing their loved ones because no one is helping to enforce the laws that protect them. No matter where you live, we all must take these issues seriously, and we must act now to make the world a safer place.  
    We all can help and below are some ideas how to: 

    • Talk with your family and friends gently when you have conflicts with each other
    • Participate in local community events such as sports events and barbeques to get to know one another in safe environments
    • Respect your classmates if they have different opinions and try to appreciate the value of their thoughts
    • Raise your voice against any type of bullying at your school. 
    • Report online bullies. If you notice harassment on a message board or in a chat room, flag that person. 
    • Learn more about laws and rules and inspire others to become active members in their community

    The COVID-19 pandemic made everyone realize how important working together is. No country can fight the pandemic alone: international cooperation is our only option. Some regions don’t have the necessary equipment to offer services to their people, which means other countries need to provide help and support. This can be the case for providing health care, quality education or nutritious food. As always, you can also help within your own family and community to foster partnerships and solidarity.  

    Below are some ideas of how to achieve this: 

    • Participate in group projects at school and try to listen to different members’ ideas.
    • Join a local sports team, music group or creative club to get to know your neighbors.
    • Donate some of your pocket money to a cause that you believe in.
