After the reformation, Christianity split in 2. Protestant churches existed in Europe. Protestant churches were dominate in the north, and Catholic in the south.

Religious Freedom?

Religious freedom started after the Reformation. In Germany the princes agreed to be able to choose whether or not they are Protestant. France got its religious freedom taken away though.

30 years war

The last religious war started. It started in Bohemia. A Jesuit-educated ruler tried to make everyone Catholic.

Jesuits

The Catholic Church attempted to confront the Reformation. They created Jesuits who were basically extreme Catholics. Required heavy schooling.

Increased Power

The ruling nobles got increased power. This was due to the church no longer having a tight hold on them.

Divided Germany

Due to the Holy Roman Emperor's actions, the princes could choose what their religion would be. As a result Germany became divided. They lost their main shared characteristic

More money to go around (except for the pope)

As people started to move away from the Catholic Church, they didn't have to pay the Church anymore. They had more money to spend on their own lives now that they didn't have to give some of it up.

Increased Literacy

Confiscated Church property

Created Calvinism

Abolishing mass

Created the 95 Theses

Went into hiding

After the Diet of Worms, Martin Luther went into hiding. He got fake kidnapped by his friends to get him out of there.

Started the Lutheran church
