I remember very clearly being at a supermarket with my mother when I was four or five years old. They were giving out balloons and I wanted one, so I cried and insisted she got it for me. But she said that if I wanted something, I had to get it myself. “In life, nothing will be placed on the plate for you,” she said. This stuck with me throughout my studies and career.

Till now, I am still very grateful that I have met her and under her guidance at that stage of my life. She taught me the importance of self-awareness, self-reflection, building on character and a good heart. She assured me that it is ok not to follow the "norm" and to do what I know is right. "Giving is a Blessing and Give back!"

Whenever I would get upset over someone being unkind, behaving rudely or treating me unfairly she would gently tell me to forgive and forget. She would explain that the person must be having a bad time or must be in a bad mood resulting in inappropriate behaviour, and responding in anger would only aggravate the situation. This is something that I follow to this day besides the other lessons of empathy & unconditional love that she has been an epitome of all these years.

She was a strong and resilient woman. She was a widow in her late 40s and brought six of us up single- handedly through hardship. She passed on at the age of 103.
