Honey is a sweet liquid made by bees. Worker bees make honey by sipping nectar form flowers, taking it to their hives to share with other worker bees, storing it in their honey stomach, then producing enzymes to help it transform to honey. The bees transfer the nectar into honey combs where water starts to evaporate from the nectar. Eventually enough water is evaporated the it becomes a sticky, sweet, substance... Honey!

This book is about a girl who wakes up in a post-apocalyptic world. She woke up to find her house was abandoned, she had a strange tattoo on her hand, and that her brother went insane as did most other people with the mysterious marking. She later found that there was a disease carried by bees, and children got a special vaccination against it. People who got the vaccine went insane. She started to have flashbacks of wearing beekeeper suits to school and out the house to stay safe.

Beekeepers have to create the right environment for their bees. They must find a discrete place for the bees that is not too close to parks or sidewalks. They must also make sure to have water source with somewhere for the bees to land to make sure they don't go to neighbors water sources and drown.

Commercial beekeeping started in the 1800s. In the U.S., commercial beekeepers produce 200 million pounds of honey per year. Worldwide we produce 3 1/3 billion pounds of honey per year. Beekeepers sell honey to bakers to be used in baked goods like crackers, cookies, and cakes. Beeswax is used to make products like candles, lipstick, and polishes. Bees also help the farming business by pollinating crops.

Bees are the main animal pollinator. They pollinate by going to collect nectar from flowers which makes the flower's stamen spring up brushing the bees belly with pollen. Bees have little hairs on the underside that makes the pollen stick to them, and when they fly to the next flower they brush some of that pollen off at that plant. This process keeps going until the bee returns to its hive.

Some farmers bring honey bees to their farms for the sole purpose of pollinating crops. Without bees most crops and plants would be dead. Some plants can be pollinated by the wind, but some have a heavier or stickier pollen which makes it too heavy to be pollinated by the wind.
