1 September 1939:Hitler invades Poland

Hitler invades Poland even after the British issue a military guarantee to Poland. This is because Hitler doesn't take the guarantee seriously since the Allies have appeased him throughout the 1930s.

3 September 1939:Britain and France declare war on Germany

On 3 September the British government issues an ultimatum to try to get Hitler to withdraw from Poland. However, Hitler doesn't reply and Chamberlain declares war at 11:00 AM.

September 1939-May 1940: Phoney War

Even though Britain and France had declared war on Germany there was little fighting hence, the period between September 1939 and May 1940 was called The Phoney War

April/May 1940: Hitler invades Denmark and Norway

The Allies try to mine the waters around Norway to stop Swedish iron ore from being shipped to Germany, so the Nazis invade Denmark and Norway to prevent this.

10 May 1940-Blitzkrieg & Chamberlain resigns

Chamberlain resigns owing to Britain's failure to prevent an invasion of Norway.

Hitler invades the Low Countries and subsequently France using a tactic called 'Blitzkrieg'.

26 May 1940-Allies flee Dunkirk

Hitler successfully invades the rest of France. British and French forces make an emergency evacuation from Dunkirk

11 June 1940-Italy joins WWII

Mussolini joins the war later since, he believed Italy wasn't ready for war earlier, in 1939. Additionally, he wanted to expand Italian influence/territory in the Balkans and Africa.

22 June 1940 France surrenders to Germany

French officials sign an armistice and surrender to Germany.

10 July-31 October 1940-Battle of Britain

The Luftwaffe launches a grand-scale assault on Britain in order to secure control over British airspace and therefore, take over Britain. The attempt fails and the Germans are unable to take over Britain.

22 September 1940-Tripartite Pact
