The troops crushed a brief reform movement in the country known as the Prague Spring. The Soviets feared the movement would lead to democracy. This matters today because people shouldn't be invading other countries without a right to do it.

August 19, 1991 - The fall of the Soviet Union

The final end of the Cold War, and the fall of the Soviet Union. In August 1991, communist hardliners and military elites tried to overthrow Gorbachev and stop the failing reforms in a coup but failed.

1988 - Moscow loses control

Moscow starts to have no control over whats going on and doesn't know what to do. Moscow needs to find a way to get back on track and find a way to make it stop. Luckily, the cold war soon ended after that. This matters now because, if a country doesn't have any control, it could end in a really bad situation and could potentially start up a war!

October 17 1959 – May 18 1989 - Sino-Soviet

Mongolia was Soviet-aligned while Afghanistan and North Korea remained neutral, with the former eventually becoming Soviet-aligned in the late 1970s. This matters today because we can become alliances with other countries to provide more for the economy. But also, there can be cons of this. Some people might not agree with it and get angry!

November 1, 1952 - US Tests First Hydrogen Bomb

The US tests the first ever hydrogen bomb in the Marshall Islands. In an operation code-named Mike, the first hydrogen bomb was launched at Enewetak atoll in the Marshall Islands, November 1, 1952. This matters now because there are so many different types of bombs that any country can get their hands on making it hard for everyone to control what other countries do.

October 30, 1961 - Soviet Union tests the largest nuclear weapon ever built in history

The Soviet Union launches the biggest nuke ever also known as The Tsar Bomba in Novaya Zemlya island. If more people get their hands on large bombs like these, if there is a war going on, it could end terribly.

After WWII, the Cold War began. The US and the Soviet Union and their allies, there was a war between them on economic and other political reasons. This matters now because there was a lot of conflict in the war and moving forward to now, every single war that has ever happened in history has had at least some form of conflict between 2 or more countries.
