According to the textbook, swatch #40 is corduroy made from 100% cotton. This fabric is easy to recognize because of the soft, ribbed surface, which is known as wales, that has that velvety texture and cozy feel. Corduroy is often used for fall and winter clothing because it is thick, comfortable, and holds warmth well.

Some strengths of cotton corduroy include its softness, durability, and ability to take dye easily, giving it rich color. However, it also has a few weaknesses. For example, it can shrink if not washed properly, it can wrinkle easily, and collect lots of lint or dust. Overall, corduroy is still a very popular fabric choice for casual and stylish garments.

This is would be an outerwear piece. The Corduroy fabric traps air and provides warmth, making it suitable for layering jackets. Also, cotton corduroy is sturdy enough to take the weight and stress of an, what they call , the outer shell. The visual texture gives it character without needing heavy adornment.

This corduroy blazer/jacket offers structure. Especially, when woven with tighter wales and a dressy yet casual look. This piece can be dressed up or down. The pile it has provides a subtle sheen and depth of tone. This makes it more interesting than plain twill, while still having enough firmness to hold lapels and tailoring.

The fabric’s durability makes it suitable for a garment that will get a lot of use for open, buttoning, layering.

This reinforces how corduroy works in lighter outerwear blazer styling. The depth of the ribs (wales) helps the fabric look rich and multi-purposeful. Used as a jacket, the cotton nature ensures breathability and comfort.

This outfit uses medium-wale cotton corduroy, which gives it a structured yet soft look. Corduroy fabric's ridged surface adds texture and warmth, making it ideal for transitional weather like Spring and Fall. The material’s durability and breathability make it perfect for everyday layering sets, which is comfortable enough for daily wear but created well enough to look polished.

Origin Story of Corduroy

Corduroy was populated in the 1970's, typically in pieces such as deep lapel collars and wide-high waisted pants.

However, in the 19th century, it was known for being a fabric symbolized by the working class and political radicalism.

Going back in time even farther, The fabric originated around 200 B.C. in Egypt. The city of Fustat had given it the name "fustian", which was a heavy cloth that shared the same qualities like velvet and moleskin. In the medival period it was given to Europe which was passed along to Italian and Spanish Merchants.

Now in 1774, that is where we see the name change gradually. the French “corde du roi” means the "king's cords". This would be a combination of cord and duroy, which is a coarse woollen cloth, but others think it may have been given a French-sounding name by British merchants in an effort to capitalise on the vogue for French textiles.

From the textbook in class, one of the important facts that stuck out to me was the production process of fabrics. According to the my response for the "Fashion Industry" assignment I explained textile mills produce knitted or woven fabric from yarn, what most would call “griege fabric” or unfinished fabric"(Baugh, 2011,pp. 23-24). Knowing Corduroy is a woven fabric, this article dives more in a simplistic way about the different types and how they are sustainable to our environment.
