Makes sense that its not the coach sometimes that can influence a player for example being competitive can defiantly come from a older sibling or family unit. If they don't have a older sibling then I guess that's where the coach or other players step in to try help that (but we don't think that can be simulated In the same way)

Problems with it. At a grassroots level, FA rules dictate that they can’t play against kids who are too many age groups above. Grassroots clubs might not have coaches at different age groups who really engage with each other.

Easier to manage within a professional environment.

Definitely see the value in it, need to find ways to incorporate it at grassroots level. Maybe training sessions (non contact). More free play for kids. Set up Firmino sessions (4 goals smaller sided). Maybe 3v3 but older kids can only tackle their own age

Interesting topic and learnt a lot on that player development can be related to their family size. In addition, the effects that can be created in the coaching process by getting different age groups to mentor each other which can have strong affect on the social development of players.

Is the most important idea less about birth order or family size and more about having a mentor who is not an adult? Someone who you can confide in and get advice from who is less of an authority?

Interesting concept but difficult to isolate birth order as the variable ... how do we take the impact of parents, coaches, opportunities, genetics into consideration in our research? Would love to see a larger sample size ... inc kids who don’t make it.

My takeaway is that for optimal development a community of practice (or a number of communities of practice) needs to be formed where there are players you can look up to, compete with - and in many instances this will be with kids of an older age. This might come from siblings, cousins, friends, kids on the estate etc.

Hi Mark, This has really got me thinking with a different perspective and opens up so many different aspects to consider. What influenced me growing up. Did I influence my siblings. What did I do with my children and now my grandkids. How do I impact on an individuals learning. And that's just off the top of my head.
