Great question! We schedule out a time to plan that works for both professionals. Sometimes that looks like meeting 1-2x a week during our lunches, before school, after school. If we don't share a convenient time to meet in person, we also plan a time to meet via Google. Lastly, we ask our administrators if it's possible to take a 1/2 day occasionally to plan out larger units (especially if we're a new co-teach partnership). Hope this helps! :)

I'm so sorry to hear this! It doesn't ever feel good to work in an environment when you don't feel welcomed. I am a fan of using the "reset" mindset. I would encourage you to consider scheduling a time to 1)reflect on how the past semester went, 2)celebrations/areas for growth as a team, 3)priorities/pet peeves, and 4)goal setting for the remainder of the year. If you don't feel comfortable doing this face to face, you could even try creating vision boards using Google Slides. Make a vision board for yourself and have your co-teacher make one. Then you can both have more time to reflect in depth on your own before coming together to plan for the future. It's never too late to reset, reframe, and move forward with a fresh perspective! Hope this helps!

Yes, there is a difference between the two. Co-Teaching is both teachers truly teaching. This takes time and support from your campus admin. Inclusion is more of an assistant role. Currently, our Junior School is the only school with the true co-teach model. Our elementary schools are starting with an inclusion model with supported classrooms where the sped teachers are going into gen ed classrooms to work specifically with the sped students. Fingers crossed, we will eventually get to co-teaching at all campuses!

Unfortunately, sometimes that's how it starts. Most districts place a lot of focus on STAAR and those subject areas. My best advice here would be to start by training the gen ed teachers in those non-inclusion areas in how to accommodate and help students with IEPs. Hopefully, your district can add a few new sections each year to help serve more students.

My first question is... who schedules your ARDs? I would start with that person and see if they can try to schedule all ARDs during your conference periods. Sometimes I do have to pull teachers during a class, but I try really hard not to if possible. Most of the time if I do have to pull a co-teacher during a class, the gen ed teacher will cover the class for the day.

I'm not sure if there is a true right answer to this. At our Junior School, we have co-teach in 6, 7, and 8 grade for English, Math, Science and Social Studies. Our high school is just now adding co-teach classes. They started with science and social studies since they do not have sped resource classes in those areas. They're hoping to start adding in co-teach English and Math soon.

Assigning Roles and Responsibilities in a New Co-Teaching Relationship

Thank you for your question! We shared a few resources at the end of our presentation to help you get started including some sample forms that break down roles/responsibilities for both educators in the planning, presentation, and reflection stages of a lesson/unit. We think it helps in a new partnership to even break down who is going to do the warm up/exit, who is going to go over directions/expectations, who is going to present new materials or facilitate an activity, who is going to initiate closing and clean up, etc. The more you plan ahead, the more comfortable both of you will feel and this builds the foundation of trust you need to make co-teaching rewarding for both the educators and learners!
