To figure out the theme of a story you will need to understand what the author is not telling you about the main idea of the story. Next you need to look back in the text to see if your theme is in the text. After you find the theme you can also find the Main Idea, Problem and Solution, Compare and contrast things, and find details for a summary. Also in the theme of a story you also can double check your theme if it the reader or author doesn't understand the theme. When you find the the just look for what the author doesn't tell you.

How you figure out the theme of the story is by figuring out what the text is teaching or telling you as a lesson, since a theme is the same thing as a moral. To learn the moral is to look for the main idea to help understand the text better. For example, in the classic "The Tortoise and The Hare" the moral/theme is that slow and steady wins the race, I can figure this out because the hare was carefree about winning the race making frequent rests along the way while the tortoise never stopped or gave up even when he knew he was slower but won the race. That is how you can find the theme of a story in a text.

If you don't know theme is what the passage teaches you and it must be something you could take in for your life. To find the theme of a text or story you will need to understand the order of events happening in a passage. This will help you conclude or should I say sum up the story. Before you can do that you may have to recognize the characters and their actions. For example: In The Boy Cried Wolf. The boy tricked people by shouting out wolf when the wolf was not there ,but when the wolf was there nobody payed him any attention. In effect the boy's sheep were eaten. According to the characters actions I understand the importance of the theme karma. Also when finding theme make sure it is universal. This means it can be the same as other stories and life not just in one single book. Just know theme can help figuring out text structure. Such as: Cause and effect. Like what leads up to the theme or how does relate to theme. These are all things that text structure may help theme and theme may help text structure.

The theme is a answer or moral of a story that is universal. You find the theme when you find your main idea or if you found your main idea you are close to finding the theme. For example if the main idea of a passage is Tim didn't keep his room clean the theme would be some thing like keep your space clean. I use the main idea and made it a universal idea so I can use it not only in keeping my room clean. These are my simple steps to finding the theme. First, read the passage. Second, Read again and look for important parts. Third, use the important parts to find the main idea. Fourth, turn the main idea into some thing you can use every day or a universal idea that means you can apply what you learned to different problems. In conclusion you figure out the theme by making the main idea universal.
