One of the great giants of the Belize jungle is the Mahogany Tree (Swietenia Macrophilla). It rises straight and tall to over a hundred feet from massive buttresses at the roots, with a crown of big, bright green leaves, over the canopy of the surrounding trees. The Belize Coat of Arms and Flag both depict the Mahogany Tree.
Beginning about the middle of the 17th century, British immigrants exploited the forest for mahogany. It was first shipped to the United Kingdom in squared log form. The motto "Sub Umbra Floreo", found on the Belize flag, means "Under the shade (of the mahogany tree) I flourish."
