It's very useful to guide this process with prompts. For every 10 minutes of learning, a student needs 2 minutes of processing time (10/2 theory). Also, according to the primacy/recency theory, students only retain what they learn in the beginning and end of a lesson, so it makes sense to chunk the lessons (i.e., stop and jot) before moving on. It also provides a ideal time to plan a "seed question" to assess where your students are in their learning. If a teacher already has "seed questions" this would be a great place to modify the assignment to add those in.
