The following games can be very useful in deepening or developing infant's understanding of the numbers up to 10.

This is an interactive game in which the task is to match different representations of numbers in pairs. In fact the set of cards has four possible representations of each of the numbers so children can discuss how each of those representations shows the number. This can be played online (here: https://nrich.maths.org/8282) or you can print out the cards below.

How to further develop the game:

Play with a scoring system - you start with a certain number of points, lose 1 points whenever you turn over cards that don't match, and add 3 points whenever they do match. Keep the score using counters.

Play against the clock - can you beat your best time?/match all the cards within a certain time?

Play with face up cards - the cards are all face-up at the start so you children focus on the maths rather than the memory aspect of the game.

A. Memory Match
This is identical with the matching card game however the children can engage in this game in their groups rather than on their own/online. Several demonstrations of the game should be carried out so the children are comfortable with the rules and steps of the games.

Materials: 2 players, 12 dot cards, comprised of six pairs of cards showing two different arrangements of a particular number of dots, from 1 to 6 dots. (For example, any. two cards from the picture below).

Rules: Spread all the cards out face down. The first player turns over any two cards. If they are a pair, the player removes the two cards and scores a point. If they are not a pair, both cards are turned back down in their places. The second player then turns over two cards and so on. When all the cards have been matched, the player with more pairs wins. Change the pairs of children often.

How to further develop the game:

Increase the number of cards used.

Use a greater number of dot cards.

Pair a dot card with a numbered card

B. Deal and copy
Materials: 3-4 players, 15 dot cards with a variety of dot patterns representing the numbers from one to five and a plentiful supply of buttons or counters.

Rules: One child deals out one card (face up) to each player. Each child then uses the counters to copy the arrangement of dots on their card and says the number aloud. The dealer checks each result, then deals out a new card to each player, placing it on top of the previous card. The children then rearrange their counters to match the new card. This continues until all the cards have been used. Change the dealer often, therefore each child gets a turn to peer assess.

How to further develop the game:

Each child can predict aloud whether the new card has more, less or the same number of dots as the previous card. The prediction is checked by the dealer, by observing whether counters need to be taken away or added.

Increase the number of dots on the cards.

C. Whats the Difference?
Materials: A pack of 20 to 30 dot cards (1 to 10 dots in dice and regular patterns), counters.

Rules: Spread out 10 cards face down and place the rest of the cards in a pile face down. The first player turns over the card on top of the pile and places beside the pile. They then turn over one of the cards spread out. The player works out the difference between the number of dots on each card, and takes that number of counters. (E.g. If one card displayed 4 dots and the other 9, the player would take 5 counters.) The spread card is turned face down again in its place and the next player turns the top pile card and so on. Play continues until all the pile cards have been used. The winner is the player with the most counters; therefore the strategy is to remember the value of the spread cards so the one that gives the maximum difference can be chosen.

How to further develop the game:

Try to turn the spread cards that give the minimum difference, so the winner is the player with the fewest counters.

Roll a die instead of using pile cards. Start with a set number of counters (say 20), so that when all the counters have been claimed the game ends.

Use dot cards with random arrangements of dots.

A. Spinderella by Julia Donaldson (Counting).
The story is about Spinderella and her family (who live in a primary school). They watch the children going about their activities. Spinderella and her family really enjoy watching the children play football and decide to try it for themselves. The only only problem is that they can't count. Spinderella is visited by her Hairy Godmother, who helps her to understand how to count so they improve their game of football.

All that is left on the wall is a blank grid!

For junior infants this is a number line of 0-10. For senior infants they could put a number line of 0-20 back together.

The children would be very motivated for this game as at this age they love to be helpful to the teacher. A certain proportion of these students crave positive affirmation.
Link: https://nrich.maths.org/8169
