What characters displayed prejudice?

We were able to see almost all of the characters display prejudice at some point. One of the main focuses of the book is a community coming together to better itself directly through a garden and indirectly through common understanding. All of the characters were very standoffish with each other at the start of their respective stories for a variety of reasons, and were quick to make assumptions about each other. But, by the end something happens around the garden that has them all understand that they are all here for a common cause and their community improves because of it. (SW,JH)

What was the community's culture? What and who helped establish the community's culture?

The community is filled with working class people from all different cultural backgrounds such as Romanians, Slovaks, Italians, and African Americans. At first, they all were very distanced from each other however, when Kim decided to plant her bean seeds everything changed. The establishment of this garden united the community together because everyone put in their own form of love and effort to help the garden thrive. (ET)

How can you connect this book to the social studies curriculum?

Seedfolks can easily be integrated into a social studies lesson about communities. It can show students the different roles that people play within their own communities. It can also be a tool to use when teaching students about diversity, different cultures, and how differences are what can bring a community together.

A standard that aligns with this lesson would be:
1. Individual Development and Cultural Identity
- Role of social, political, and cultural interactions in the development of identity
- Personal identity as a function of an individual’s culture, time, place, geography,
interaction with groups, influences from institutions, and lived experiences
(ET)

What activities and/or projects could you ask your students to do while reading or after reading this book?

Because there are so many different cultures in Seedfolks, this book can act as a mirror book and a sliding glass door book for many students. Students can most likely find their own culture reflected in the book and are also immersed into the world of other cultures that they may not have known about prior to reading the book.

A standard that would align with this would be:
2. Development, Movement, and Interaction of Cultures
- Role of diversity within and among cultures
(ET)
Another activity that could be done in the classroom to connect Seedfolks to the curriculum could be to have students create mind maps to express their own culture and self.
A standard that would align with this activity would be:
1.1 Language, beliefs, customs, and traditions help shape the identity and culture of a family and a community.
- students will identify traditions that are associated with their families, and tell why the tradition is important. (CK)

After reading the book, students could be assigned groups and within these groups they could create a poster that shows different cultures they read about throughout the book and how all of the different characters and cultures connect and form a community. This could also connect to character analysis so that students are getting both social studies and literacy practice in this project.
A standard that would align with this project could be:
3.6 Communities from around the world interact with other people and communities and exchange cultural ideas and practices. (CK)

Are there characters who demonstrated racism? If so, how did they demonstrate racism?

We are able to see a few characters that demonstrated racism throughout the book. We were able to identify Ana demonstrating racism. We are able to see Ana demonstrating racism right from the start of the book. Ana saw Kim working in the dirt, planting Lima Beans and immediately assumed she was doing something illegal based only on the fact that she is Vietnamese.
(JH, CK)
