Athletic scholarship

Athletic scholarship is a kind of scholarship to go to a college or university because of your achievements and abilities in a sport.

Sports play an important part in American schools. More important than anywhere in the world. Athletic scholarships are scholarships to go to a college or university because of your achievements and abilities in a sport. The better their sport teams are, the more money a university gets. For example with ticket sales, merchandise, advertising, pep rallies, donations and other activities. All school community’s are extremely sports minded in America, they are always looking out for youngsters who distinguish themselves from other teammates and try to get them to go to their school. The ranking of a university depends on how many of these students actually choose to go to the school.

I imagine when you think of American sports you immediately think of American Football, Basketball and Baseball. However you can also get scholarships for example when you are outstanding in Skiing, Volleyball, Bowling, Fencing and many more.

It is very attractive for new students when they can choose a variety of sports in a school. Athletic scholarships give athletes the opportunity to go to college or a university without having to pay the full amount. The college money, rent for a place to live, food and other university costs can lead up to more than $40.000 a year, depending on which school you go to.

I think this is one of the reasons almost every student has extracurricular activities. This is an important thing in America because when you aren’t good with sports, you should find something else you’re good at and which shows you are a great addition to a university or college. I think you can find something of the American Dream in this, when you work had enough and do things you will end up in a good school.

Roaring Twenties

The twenties were a turbulent time. It was the aftermath of World War 1 and the economy was making his way back up. Everything politics wise turned back to normal but that was actually the only thing which turned back to normal. Because of the War the people wanted to enjoy life more than they ever did. Jazz music blossomed, the women’s fashion changed, Art Deco peaked and the major cities emphasized the era’s social, artistic and cultural dynamism. The use of automobiles, phones, pictures, radio and electricity increased which influenced the change of people’s lifestyle. This was the time celebrities and sportsman got even more attention and got worshipped by the population of America. You can still see this in American society. Most important of all in 1920 women won the right to vote in all states of America. This started the revolution which we now call The Roaring Twenties.

Which attract me most to the twenties in America is their lifestyle and fashion. I love the pearls, the silk and the dresses which accentuated just enough to challenge the men and get what they wanted. It was a whole change in the woman’s typical silhouette; the dress length went from floor length to ankle and knee length, becoming more bold and seductive.

Cosmetics became extremely popular for the first time, it wasn’t used by most women before the twenties because of the association with prostitution.

Women started taking over ‘men jobs’ in the army which allowed them to wear comfortable clothing and this made the wasp waist women were expected to wear disappear and a healthy woman’s body became the beauty image. I think this is an important evolution which helped me to be able who I want to be and how I want to look like in 2017.

Attack on Pearl Harbour

The attack on Pearl Harbour was a surprise military attack by the Imperial Japanese Navy Air Service against the United States naval base at Pearl Harbour in Hawaii. On December 7, 1941 the United States entered World War 2. Japan planned the attack to keep the American fleet from interfering with their actions they planned against the United Kingdom, the Netherlands and the United States.

353 planes flew over Pearl Harbour at 7:48 am and started bombing the naval base. 4 of the American battleships sunk and the 4 remaining ships were all damaged. 188 US aircrafts were destroyed, 2,403 American people were killed and 1,178 were wounded. The Japanese losses were a lot less disastrous. They lost 29 aircrafts, 5 submarines and 64 people.

Negotiations were still busy when the attack happened so it came as a shock to America. The lack of a formal warning led President Roosevelt to declare December 7 “a date which will live in infamy”. The attack was a war crime because of the lack of warning. On December 8 America declared war to Japan and this was the beginning of their participation in the second World War.

Many people were lost in combat that day but also many people showed to be true heroes. Because of this 15 Medals of Honor, 51 Navy Crosses, 53 Silver Stars, four Navy and Marine Corps Medals, one Distinguished Flying Cross, four Distinguished Service Crosses, one Distinguished Service Medal and three Bronze Star Medals were rewarded in total to all of the service men who survived. Later all veterans received a special military award, the Pearl Harbour Commemorative Medal. Since that day 7 December is Pearl Harbour Day. Although it is not a national holiday, there are annually ceremonies held at Pearl Harbour and every year the veterans who are still alive visit these ceremonies.
