The Bad Part of History

Slavery has ended 135 years ago, but many still feel the pain of what their ancestors were put through. Katherine Anne Porter posses this in her realistic novel The Witness. Taking place on an old farm in the south , the novel begins when Uncle Jimbilly is experiencing pain in his hands. "His hands were closed and stiff from gripping objects tightly, while he worked at them, and they could not open altogether even if a child took took the thick black fingers and tried to pull them back"(Porter 3-6), and unable to take a firm grip on anything. This physical let down is showed through imagery. Katherine Anne Porter uses this as a symbol of how hard Uncle Jimbilly was worked when he was a slave. Uncle Jimbilly's health represents how Negroes of the time were treated in the slave camps, and how they were not treated well in our nation's past. The children Uncle Jimbilly is talking to are realizing history had rough parts, us modern day americans would prefer to forget.

The Witness Introduction
Does learning about slavery give you a new perspective on life? In Katherine Anne Porter's novel, The Witness, the story is told through the eyes of Uncle Jimbilly, a freed slave, telling a few children about the horrors of what it was like to be a slave. Katherine Anne Porter uses the literary tools of syntax, diction, and imagery to help develop the theme of the evils of racism. Through these tools the readers are able to get a more in depth knowledge of how Uncle Jimbilly thinks and feels when telling his time of being a slave. Also, the readers get to see how the children react to hearing the stories of Uncle Jimbilly.

Have you ever felt like no one around you was able to understand the things that you’ve been through throughout your life? In the passage of The Witness, by Katherine Anne Porter, there is a very obvious common theme, which is the evils of racism. I think that the author uses multiple different elements to help set the tone and also help us figure out the theme. Some of the elements used include: diction, tone, imagery, and detail. All of these elements make it easier for the reader to decide what the theme and setting are. The purpose of this passage is to inform the readers of the terrible reality that is slavery, and to describe the experiences that African Americans had during the era of slavery. And also to display how little some people know about slavery.

Katherine Anne Porter who wrote The Witness, is a writer through the 1930s and 40s writing about tragedies of the time period. Through syntax, diction, detail, and tone, Porter shows how the white children react to Uncle Jimbilly’s stories about the “horrors of slave times.” These stories force the children to face the reality of their ancestors actions, as written the children feel “embarrassment” for the past hoping to never have history repeat itself again.

The Witness is an intriguing story of an ex-slave that has lost himself in the new society. This tale was written by Katherine Anne Porter to display the theme of racism. After the Civil war, Jimbilly tells different stories to the children he serves of his past and about his experiences on the era of slavery. The author uses plenty of tools like imagery, syntax and diction to display the character’s misfortunes in the dark era. In continuation, Jimbilly’s explicit stories and details show how slaves and former slaves had very difficult lives and didn’t deserve their experiences.

Have you ever been through something that is downright unfair, but there is nothing you can do to stop it? This may have the same effect on use-to-be slaves. Slavery in the United States of America has been abolished since the year 1865, but people that have experienced slavery may still carry it with them throughout their lives. Katherine Anne Porter, a writer during the 1930’s and 40’s writes about a character named, Uncle Jimbilly and his hard times going through slavery. Through diction and syntax, Katherine portrays how children reflect on Uncle Jimbilly’s stories. These stories make the children realize how awful days of slavery in the past make them feel a sense of “embarrassment” and hope things don't get as bad as they used to be.

Everyone’s life comes with a story that is meaningful to other people around them like their family or friends. In “The Witness” written by Katherine Anne Porter, Uncle Jimbilly tells Paul, Maria, and Miranda his hardships of being a slave. He tells them about his experience being a slave during the hardest time of his life. Porter uses the literary tools syntax, diction, and imagery to help develop the theme of the story which is coming to terms with reality. This would be the theme because, before Uncle Jimbilly told them his life story they didn’t know what slaves actually had to go through. By hearing his story this made the kids feel guilty and embarrassed because they felt terrible that someone had to go through something that tragic.

Slaves with marketable skills like carpentry, construction, and others worked in those trades and some started successful small businesses. After slavery Uncle Jimbilly was carving miniature tombstones out of blocks of wood. This was shown in "The Witness" by Katherine Anne Porter. Facing the darkness and reality of your past can be hard, it can even make you angry. Uncle Jimbilly was finding it hard to adapt to his present day life because of how rough his past in slavery was. The Witness
There are many stories about slavery, and what harm it did to African Americans. Some people believe slavery wasn’t as bad as the history books say it was. When you get to talk to a former/freed slave, the will tell you just how bad it actually was. Katherine Anne Porter shows us a depiction of slavery from her novel, The Witness. This story is set on an old farm in the deep south of America. The story begins when a former slave, Uncle Jimbilly loses feeling in his hands. He isn’t able to lift anything. There is symbolism here, because it shows how slaves were treated.

Awful things that happen in a person's life such as slavery can affect how someone acts and thinks forever. In The Witness, Katherine Porter explains how Jimbilly, was a former slave and now works on a farm, fixing things, plowing, and working hard everyday. He dwelt so much on the horrors of his slave time. He would often tell stories of his experiences. Through diction, tone, and imagery Katherine Porter shows us a good picture of how the three children react to Jimbilly’s story. We can clearly see how horrible it was for him.

In “The Witness,” written by Katherine Anne Porter, Uncle Jimbilly discusses of some of the beatings he had witnessed during that time period. They go into detail of how this changed him as a person and why doesn't take orders from other people and works at his own pace. This man, Uncle Jimbilly, tells children stories about his past and the horrors behind it; by doing this, the children see slavery from a whole new perspective. To help put this story to life, Porter uses diction and imagery to create the theme of deeper evils and the racism of the time period.
