In your groups, work together to make a jot about how "The Lottery" critiques the world we live in. Please make sure your all of your names are on your post.

EXAMPLE JOT:
I believe "The Lottery" critiques how people often do not question traditions, and partake in things they may not want to.
The story critiques: Loss of Individualism
I think this because: The Lottery is something the people in this village have been doing for very long. I also know that the people of this village continue with the Lottery despite how violent and upsetting it is because no one wants to question it -- even when many other villages have stopped doing it.
So: “The Lottery” suggests that people in our current society often lose their individuality by following what everyone around them does even if it has negative consequences. It teaches the lesson that we should question what we feel is not right.

KEEP IN MIND!

It may be helpful to keep in mind the 5 main traits of dystopian fiction we went over on our first day. These can help you understand ways that the story is critiquing the world we live in.

1. GOVERNMENTAL CONTROL
2. SURVIVAL
3. TECHNOLOGICAL CONTROL
4. LOSS OF INDIVIDUALISM
5. ENVIRONMENTAL DISASTERS/CHANGES

You are welcome to use any of the 5 traits, but if you and your group find another strong theme/trait the story comments on, you can certainly make your jot about that!

The story critiques: Survival

We think this because: In the story "The Lottery" the people are killing other people and don't give what they are doing a second thought and just do it...but it they were to be the one in the situation they would have given a second thought like Tessa, was screaming it was not fair.

So: "The Lottery" gives readers an idea that sometimes in our society people tend to do things that they don't mean for themselves. This suggests the idea of survival for ourselves.

The story critiques: Survival
I think this because: When they do the lottery at least one person ends up dying from everyone throwing pebbles and stones at them. When they were picking a piece of paper everyone had to choose which one to pick and tried choosing the one without the black dot in it in order to live

So: they have to get the blank piece of paper or they will be pelted with stones and end up dying. This shows how some of the decisions made can sometimes be based on luck and can sometimes end up being bad.

The story critiques: Survival
We think this because: Everyone that lives there struggles to survive because one day if they are chosen in the lottery they will die, and people don't think about what they're doing to people to survive
So: People are often selfish when it comes to survival and they'll do anything to survive.

We think this is unfair governmental control. We think this because in the story the people are forced to do the lottery which puts their lives at risks. Another reason this is governmental control is that they don't have an option and the only reason they get killed is because the majority of people won't speak up. The lottery suggests that you don't always get what you want.

Our group thinks that the lottery showcases how people do what the government wants them to do, like in the world today how no one questions what the government does. The citizens also have no power over the government.
The story critiques: Governmental Control
I think this because: Everyone in the town is pelting rocks at Ms. Hutchenson including her kids. This shows that even though it's their mom, the government still has control over what they do.
So: The Lottery showcases that the government has control over citizens and the citizens don't have the power to change their decisions which could lead to people making wrong decisions such as citizens harming their loved ones.

The story critiques Govenment control because the govenment is telling people what to do and deciding how to run the country, and the people of the countries don't stop to think whether the desicions will have a positive or negative impact on the country and on the people because they don't want to get in trouble with the govenment, so the governement can get away with things that the citizens might not want.
