Talking to my mother feels like wading through a pool of molasses.

When Joseph Stowell said ‘Communication is a two-way street’, he was referring to how a christian can always communicate with the heavens but should be more concerned about if their Lord can always get through to them, and certainly not a transgender teen trying to talk with an unsupportive parent.
However the saying has obviously evolved from its original context to be a general statement about how for a successful conversation, it requires both parties to listen to each other and provide reciprocal information. With this method, communication is negotiated, both people gather and express details and are willing to make changes to exist in harmony; ideally progressing into a mutually satisfactory situation. This is how we are generally taught correspondences should work, theoretically this should be how everyone speaks to one another. It took many years and an autism diagnosis before I was able to properly understand that unfortunately, people are just illogical. Despite preaching on and on about how to communicate, not many people actually are successful at doing it.

Something I have been trying to express through my most recent art is the frustration that comes with these sorts of relations, the anger and the sadness that comes from hours of fights, hours sobbing, wishing for a meager crumb of affirmation from someone who you know loves you, but won’t use your name. The mind-numbing confusion of repeating yourself again and again, years on end, until you begin to think that maybe you are the insane one after all. How every word you speak feels like nonsense with how it is being received.

The moon appears to be ever changing, but in the end it’s still whole.

Introduce your chosen subject area. What interests you as potential starting points or areas of research? What influenced this choice? (650 words)

My chosen subject area for the Final Major Project is generational trauma (it's affect on families and how to heal from it) and complicated familial dynamics. I would like to research into PTSD and CPTSD specifically, the ramifications it brings on families, and how to have conversations with family members about it. These themes are very heavy and need to be dealt with carefully which is something rather stressful but I am looking forward to trying. I would definitely like to speak to people who have had experience with some of it and maybe speak to a psychologist about it to get some first hand sources. Looking at how art can be used to combat conditions such as PTSD is something I am also wanting to look into; art therapy especially seems very interesting and I would be interested to learn more about the subject.

My choice to use this topic for my FMP was heavily influenced by my Seeds Project which focused on a one-sided conversation which at first starts as nonsensical words and phrases before turning into pleas for a better life and understanding with someone.
Whether the conversation is between friends, lovers, family or strangers, the act of a two-way conversation is thought to be commonplace, yet why is there so much strife and uneven relationships, when both parties are supposed to be putting in the effort? From looking at the intricacies of intimacy between people to communicating with one another, I had been exploring the connection between people; how a dynamic will never be able to be fully shown accurately to outsiders. The full reality of a situation can never be completely understood, just as when communicating with someone you love, they may not be able to grasp what you are saying. They can hear you speak, but are unwilling to listen to what you tell them. From that initial starting point I want to develop further examples of one-sided conversations in my work, giving a shot at more video and word based pieces which I am not as used to but very interested in experimenting more with.

I also chose this subject area as it is all something I can relate to and something I have mostly shied away from expressing in my work. As art has helped me in the process of healing myself, being able to vent through the pieces I create and turn my pain into something bright and transformative. Despite some of the many difficult challenges I've faced, art has been there as a consistent crutch that has helped me continue onwards. Being able to rely on it as a source of comfort and as almost a weapon against my struggles, has made it an incredibly important part of my life. I would therefore really like the chance to explore this very personal theme with artwork that carries heavy meaning to me and includes more than just my experiences with depression which I thought would be something more 'acceptable' and 'relatable' to talk about in my works. It is also something that I can possibly raise awareness for, as PTSD tends to be seen as something 'only veterans can have', or that 'your own trauma can't really be bad enough to be PTSD'. I think this subject, despite being something I find extremely hard to talk about, will be helpful in dealing with my own feelings, memories and experiences with the matter.
Even before I was able to comprehend my own issues with mental health, I have always had a keen interest in psychology and psychological disorders. From a scientific point of view as well, this theme is very interesting to me so I look forward to researching and gaining a better understanding of generational trauma and PTSD. As a bonus of course, I may even be able to find something that can help me in the process of healing myself.

The risk of exposure to trauma has been an integral part of the human experience since we evolved as a species. Symptoms of trauma related mental disorders are documented throughout time since at least ancient Greece. Some evidences of post traumatic illness have been argued to exist from the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, for example the diary of Samuel Pepys, who had described intrusive and distressing symptoms after the Fire of London in 1666. In Shakespeare's Henry IV appears to meet many, if not all, of the diagnostic criteria for post traumatic stress disorder, as have many other protagonists throughout literature. During both world wars, PTSD became spoken about a lot however was known under different terms, such as 'shell shock', 'soldier's heart', 'war nerves', 'neurasthenia' and 'combat neurosis'. The term we know the condition under today, post traumatic stress disorder, came into use in the nineteen seventies in large part due to the Vietnam War and the diagnoses of US military veterans. The term was officially recognised by the American Psychiatric Association in nineteen eighty in the third addition of its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-III). It was initially a controversial add, however the PTSD diagnosis filled an important gap in the theory and practice of psychiatry.
Looking into some of the history of PTSD and trauma is interesting especially with how the views about it have changed over time, which I can relate to with my own experience of different people's opinions and reactions. Of course I am lucky enough to live in a time that is much better equipped to deal with these problems however it is still so often downplayed as 'nerves' or 'cowardice'.

The field of research surrounding generational trauma (also known as intergenerational trauma or transgenerational trauma or historical trauma) is relatively new, however has been greatly expanded upon since the mid two thousands. It was first being recognised in the children of Holocaust survivors when psychologists observed large numbers of the children of Holocaust survivors seeking mental health clinic in Canada in 1966. The grandchildren as well were also in large numbers among referrals to psychiatry clinics, three hundred percent more in comparison with their representation in the general population. Since then, generational trauma is something that has been noticed in descendants of slaves, Native American genocide survivors, war survivors, refugees, survivors of domestic violence and many other groups and people that have experienced collective distress. Also some common examples of generational trauma can come from domestic violence, alcohol and drug addiction, child abuse and neglect and survivors of combat trauma.
I find that understanding and learning about generational trauma is key to being able to express it through my work, as it is something that a lot of people will experience to do with a lot of different reasons and it is important to be aware of that.

Whilst talking therapies have been a used for PTSD treatment for a long time, a lot of the time words can fail to do the job in helping. On the other hand, Art therapy tends to work very well as it provides an alternative, equally effective outlet for articulation. 'Art Expression is a powerful way to safely contain and create separation from the terrifying experience of trauma' writes Gretchen Miller, a notion I completely agree with and can relate to. It can tap into different parts of someone's experience, accessing information or emotions that might not be able to be accessed through talking alone.
Many Artists explore their own mental health through art, their own trauma, experiences and struggle. I want to learn from others with how they are able to express this through their works, and eventually should get it across through mine.

Throughout the last few months I have been looking at the subject of 'Intimacy'. During this I focused on the intimacies of knowing yourself, your own body, meaningful objects to yourself before also incorporating romantic intimacy, platonic intimacy and familial intimacy. After the seeds project I became a lot more interested specifically on the latter which I had explored in video format, something I am not very used to but really enjoyed creating. From there I wanted to develop it into specifically looking at complicated familial relationships and generational trauma for my Final Major Project. I want to branch out from painting and utilise a number of different materials for this project, especially as I think I can get a lot of my ideas out sculpturally, which is what I would like to focus on. I would really like to work with glass for a lot of the pieces I am planning; I have used broken glass a few times this year and each time I have felt the delicate and dangerous aspect of it is extremely powerful for what I want to create. I'd also like to use clear plastic/ perspex as well as clay for my future work.

https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-britain/lynette-yiadom-boakye

I was able to visit Yiadom-Boakye's exhibition at the Tate Britain which was incredible. Writing is central to her artistic practice, as she has explained: ‘I write about the things I can’t paint and paint the things I can’t write about.’ This idea is something I really want to explore through video, text which is new to me, and also paintings which are more familiar but I want to have a new purpose and outlook when I paint.
