Instead of dwelling on lives lost, stories can be an outlet to remember the great times and make up new ones. Creating stories of people who have already passed keeps them alive, being able to talk about them in a good way helps with grieving and coping. Tim writes about Linda, a girl who was the love of his life back in fourth grade, in a way that makes her seem like she's still alive. He mentions how he could see her in his dreams. Even after thirty years he still remembers her and talks about her. Stories help us not let go of people who are no longer there anymore.

Tim was able to use his dreams and stories to keep Linda alive almost and have her memory. You can go back to certain moments in your life with stories, you can change the ending and make it the way you want it to. Having the power to change the story allows you to reflect on your past events and keep them alive. It can give closure to people who are going through similar feelings. There are many soldiers out there going through the same emotions and PTSD that Tim exhibits in the book. Throughout the book, Tim talks about how during the war, he never talked about his feelings, but after the war, he was able to express his feelings through his writing. He used the stories he wrote and the experiences he talks about in interviews to cope with his PTSD. Many different things work for many different people and in Tim’s case a story is what helped him get by and survive through his heartbreak, through and after the war too. After the war Norman felt guilty, alone and scared, but the difference between him and Tim is that he had no one to talk to. Tim also felt all of those things, but he had an outlet to release how he felt and what happened.
