Elwood knew that there could be consequenses of turning in the letter, but I don't think that he believed they would actually kill him especially after he turned in the letter exposing Nickel's violence and mistreatment of the boys.

I think the blondies was emphasized at the hotel because it's one final throwback to the racism back in the day. Brownies are a more popular and common dessert so the choice to emphasize blondies instead shows how white people are still seen as the superior race in Richmond during this time

I think that it demonstrates a full circle connection to Elwood childhood. It represents Elwood's childhood during segregation and racial discrimination and then the eventual success of the civil rights movement to desegregate public spaces, something that Elwood had longed while spending time at the Richmond.

Elwood grew up fighting for what he thought was right. One of the first times he learns that not everyone agrees with him is at the convenience store. He was beaten up defending the morals that he agreed with. When Elwood submitted the letter, he knew that he was going to get hurt. To him, provide justice to others, even the ones who bullied him, was more important than protecting himself. It seemed like an act of selflessness.

Morality

I think that morality is a hard topic, and I think that's a great question. I think morality is not necessarily born, but it can be developed pretty quickly from when you are born. In Elwood's case, Elwood grows up in a moral household, grew up around people who had very moral beliefs, and going to Nickel was a test of his morality.

I think that the character of Griff represents or shows this common idea where in a place of loss of power or prison, some people try to "buff" up to protect themselves and try to gain back some of that power that has been stripped away, and we see that how the other smaller charactes look up to Griff even though hes so bad to them. They see him as their own dignity incarnate.

Why does turner choose to help Elwood

I think it's a realization that they're connected through tragedy. They both suffer from the same problem so if they're going through it together it pushes them to help each other.

I think that Turner changed his perspective about escaping with Elwood because of the connection they developed throughout the course of their time at Nickel and Turner's respect towards Elwood. They connected because Turner realized Elwood's moral values and realizes his differences from the other boys at the academy. Turner became inspired by Elwood's insistence on equality and change therefore bringing Turner's change of attitude towards helping Elwood.

MLK is a returning motif throughout the story - an immense point of inspiration for Elwood and frequently referenced as the man he wanted to be. Martin Luther King Jr. died for the Civil Rights Movement, shot like Elwood does. Just as MLK propels the movement and is lived on in memorium for his dedication to equality and justice, Elwood is lived through Turner, becoming a man that he would be proud of. In this way, I believe Whitehead is suggesting that Elwood truly does become a symbol of MLK, sacrificed for a greater purpose and carried on by loved ones.

"White" exemplifies that white people have power

I believe the significance of the white house's name is the fact that in America, the white house represents the head of the government, and overall has a very political connotation. Though the house also represents the systemic violence the boys at Nickel face due to racism. Acts of racism being perpetuated by white housemen in a facility called the "White house" provides a sense of irony aside from the simple political connotations of the name.

The Gingerbread Man

Turner never knows the end of the Gingerbread man's story, whether he escapes or is killed. Turner and Elwood represent two separate endings of story, where one is eaten and the other is never caught. I think Whitehead is symbolizing that no two people could ever escape Nickel - there will always be the sacrifice and the damned, and the gingerbread who escapes.

I think that though the White House was originally the name and it is hard to change it, I think that its significance is also found in its reference to the White House where the president lives. I think that the executive branch, which carries out laws and punishments, is a reference that the admin of Nickel are abusing these kids and carrying out their "punishment". It also has an idea of cleanliness, how the government is disregarding these abuse claims, and has such bias against people of color in the justice system.

So many decisions are taken away from him at Nickel, so this is a small act of rebellion, choice, and even dignity.

The White House

He didn't change the name of the White House because of the tragedy surrounding the name, along with its double meaning. The White House is the capital of the United States, our "free" country, but the white house at Nickel proves the country is a lot less free than we might know. The white house at Nickel is hidden behind this name that all Americans associate with freedom, which fools people who don't know about the abuse and violence of Nickel Academy.

How would Elwood have lived if Turner and Elwood's positions had been switched.

I think that if Elwood had survived he might have not gotten far, I think that if Elwood watched Turner die, Elwood would have once again, tried to get his story and message out about Nickle, because he would try and avenge the death of his friend, and if the story had gotten out and IF any goverment power didn't do anything about it, then Elwood would most likley get dragged back to Nickle, and since he doesn't have the help of Turner, there would be no escape and Elwood would be taken straight to "Out Back"

Turner's Soap

I think this is an important piece of Turner's character arc - he's so used to being alone, but when he finds Elwood, he realizes that maybe there's another way to live, where he can have a companion and not have to choose the self vs. others path. This of course would develop his character into the one we see at the end of the book, living in the biggest city with a wife, the Turner who risks his life to save his friend. The time shared in the hospital between the boys is also a use of Foster's Communion convention, where the boys share meals and time together, and builds their bond of friendship. Without their time in the hospital I don't think they would have become the same loyal friends who depended on eachother to survive.

Alternate Universe: Turner is killed and Elwood survives.

Towards the end, where Turner and Elwood make their escape from Nickel Academy, Turner's death in that moment would definitely have a negative impact on Elwood. We could likely see Elwood adopting Turner's outlook against systemic racism, seeing the fight more pessimistically and rather working to survive. We already know that leading up to their escape Elwood is beginning to doubt his actions, and the death of Turner, his best friend, the person who opened his eyes to the reality of black Americans' situation, might solidify those feelings. Howdy.

He was too white for the black side, and too black for the white side, what does this say about Nickel's bias and need for a perfectionate appearance?

Loyalty

Turner and Elwood learned to be loyal to each other throughout the story. One example of this is Turner initially saying he would never escape with someone else but ends up attempting to escape with Elwood. Clearly, the boys' time at Nickel is uniting them through their loneliness, which we can see in turner's loyalty to protect Elwood and escape together, which is contradictory to his initial opinion to never try to escape with anyone else.
