I have been more intentional on re-framing negative thoughts about myself but at times I feel that my mind wanders too much and I loose control of my thoughts (which can be very overwhelming). I also have been forcing myself to take walks during my lunch break while listening to soothing music. This has been helpful to practice more self-compassion behaviors such as intentional breathing exercises. I am currently working on setting boundaries and feeling okay to speak-up to avoid cycling into my pattern of over-committing/pleasing others.

Lately I have been trying to engage in more self-care strategies as I progress through school and my practicum placement. For example, I try to engage in physical activities such as hiking or running at the gym to clear my mind and get away from the stresses from school and work. I still struggle with acting with more compassion towards myself. For example, I engage in negative self-talk. When life gets busy or difficult I feel like I give up to easily and put myself down. I hope to be more positive when reflecting on what I've accomplished rather than focus on the negatives or struggles I'm having. When I engage in more positive self-talk, I feel less anxious and have a more positive frame of mind. This is a skill I will continue to practice on a daily basis.
- Leah Smith

One of the values I identified at the first session was genuineness. Since the first session, I have made an effort to remind myself to be more genuine, to speak and act from a place of genuineness. I found it was much easier to do so right after the first session, but I found myself forgetting to do so often. However, at times when I was more self-reflective or in a more positive mental space, I would wonder back to the idea of genuineness and using that to connect to others. Just the other day, I was more consciously aware of that value and reminded myself throughout the day - I found that I was less anxious and was able to be more present in the moment, as well as overall being in a more positive frame of mind. - Susan Selfridge

Learning to like myself

The past couple months have been insanely busy personally, professionally, and with my family. While it took me a while to write down and complete the self-care handbook, I really took the tips and practices from the first session to heart and found myself practicing them. Mostly, just more self-awareness that helped me keep everything in perspective and not spin out. I thought about situations I was in, how I responded, and how it made me feel. This reflection also went hand in hand with learning to appreciate myself, struggles and all. Re-framing my circumstances really helped me let go of them and when everyone around me was negative, to know that I didn't have to be negative too if I didn't want. My anxiety has decreased and I feel excited to keep working on it!
- Katie Romani

Values Self-Care Connection

In reflecting on my values and self-care plan from the first session, I realize how connected they are. It's impossible to live my values of passion (i.e. being fully engaged, present, and authentic) and inner peace (i.e. sense of well-being, calmness, and grace irrespective of anything else going on) when I'm not practicing self-care such as fitting in regular workouts, making healthy food choices that energize rather than bring me down, spending quality time with people I care about, and practicing a form of mindfulness whether meditation or just remembering to breath deeply. I know these things yet struggle to find balance. Lately it seems like giving time to one area (e.g. working out) means cutting another short, then I get buried in work and stress for a while before coming up for air and trying again. That said, I realize self-care is a journey and I remain committed and optimistic (practicing my positive self-talk!)
- Lisa Taylor

Since Module 1, self-care has been at the forefront of my mind. I implemented an (almost) daily routine of listening to my Calm app to help relax my mind. Mainly, the app forces me to step away temporarily from whatever I am hyper-focused on, which is great. I have also recently been practicing yoga, which helps me breathe and notice my immediate surroundings. As the semester has become more stressful, however, I have stopped both of the above practices. I know that I need to implement my self-care practices more than ever at this point, but simply cannot gather the energy to do so.

I have tried to be very mindful of my self-care. Some of the things I've done are taking personal time at home and asking for support from professors and colleagues. Self-care has always been very difficult for me and it has certainly been a challenge to incorporate that into my regular schedule. I'm a mother of three young children and in school full time, finding the time and the energy to take care of myself is difficult, to say the least. However, I have made and intentional effort to do more self-care and I have noticed a difference in my stress levels. I'm still getting more stressed than I would like, but a lot less often, which is nice. -Gaby Leon

I admit it's been hard to break old habits, but what has helped me the most is to remember what is more important for me. During stressful periods, I have taken the time to share with friends and with my husband, which energizes me and helps me to continue working.

Victoria Cuadra L.

Since the first Thrive lesson, I have tried to incorporate more time for myself throughout the week. I noticed through our first conversation that self-care was always something I would brush off if I became busy. By making sure I take more time for myself and allow myself the time to relax, destress, and then refocus on my work, I have noticed that my capacity to deal with the stress has increased.
Jessica Nimie

Reflecting back, I realize that I have been doing a better job of keeping myself centered and focused in the moment. With so many deadlines approaching I feel out of control and naturally feel frustrated. However, with positive self-talk I have been able to keep my feeling in proportion to the situation. When I self-talk I remind myself to focus on the larger goal. I also remind myself to be patient not just with others but myself as well.

I have learned to focused on time management to prevent the stress. It was nice and calming to be able to complete work in smaller amounts of time and breaking them up into workable chunks/smaller goals rather than an all-nighter the night before it was due. I would set positive rewards for myself to accomplish tasks. This has been a positive experience.
