(page 32, lines 3-7)

Imagine you are Snowball, write a short paragraph about your thoughts and feelings as you are chased out of Animal Farm by the nine enormous dogs. I was very scared.

We are suppose to help one another and help Animal Farm grow. Could it be that he is jealous of something else of me which was created through my power in the Animal Farm? I hope he can come back to his conscience, apologise for his mistake and will be able to work with me to grow Animal Farm.

the feelings of that of betrayal, confusion and unjustified treatment were what I had in my mind when I was running for my life from these 9 enormous and barbarous dogs. What have I done? What did I possibly do to deserve this? I promise that my actions were all due to pure dedication and determination to give my fellow animals an easier and better life (as finally, we are out of that horrible owner-Mr Jones’s control! We were all free!)and I have never harboured ill intentions or have ever sided with Mr Jones cruel treatment. Could it be… the windmill idea? No… I don’t think that would have made Napoleon chase me out!…that plan was to let the other animals have a lesser workload and for them not to struggle as much with their duties! although I must say, looking back at it, I definitely saw jealousy in Napoleon’s eyes as he reviewed my plan…No other animal in the Farm (other than Boxer) probably had the same amount of dedication and willingness to improve the conditions for the Farm as I did. I did nothing wrong…so why? The dogs get closer and closer to me,as I try to find something-something that I could seek refuge in , to shield me from these monsters. The sight of the nine petrifying dogs started to come closer and closer…goodbye fellow animals,I had tried my best to do everything for the farm to make it a better place for everybody…

Those terrifying, ferocious dogs, with their sharp teeth and their wild eyes... enough to strike fear into any animal's heart. Never in my life have I felt so betrayed! Why was I chased out of the farm by those horrid creatures? Did Napoleon hate me that much? Why did he kick me out? There are so many thoughts flying around my mind, and I can hear the barks of those dogs behind me. How far are they going to chase me? That power-hungry pig... I bet he was jealous. Yes, that's it, he was jealous. Jealous that I was smart enough to think about building a windmill. Jealous that I was better than him. Hah! That filthy backstabber. Destroying my plans and then having me chased away... All I wanted to do was make Animal Farm a better place for all animals...

I bet nobody will like him when I am not around in Animal Farm. Jealous of my plans to build a windmill for my farm, to provide electricity for us, to keep us warm during the winter? In the poem, the evidence " Napoleon had taken away from their mothers and reared privately" ."reared privately " tells me that he raised the dogs since young without any contact or social interactions with the animals. " they wagged their tails to him in the same way as the other dogs had been used to do to Mr Jones" tells me that the dogs were gaslighted and grew up thinking napoleon was their owner and must listen to his instructions, to fulfil napoleons own benefits. Thus, Napoleon is very self centered.

Additionally, Snowball genuinely believes in the principles of Animalism, the ideology that drives the rebellion against human oppression. He strives to uphold these principles and improve the animals' lives based on equality and fairness. However, Napoleon uses fear, propaganda, and manipulation to maintain control over the animals. He employs Squealer to spread lies and distortions to justify his actions and consolidate his power.

Napoleon is a more effective leader due to his visionary and innovative thinking.

"Within a few weeks Snowball's plans for the windmill were fully worked out. The mechanical details came mostly from three books which had belonged to Mr. Jones—'One Thousand Useful Things to Do About the House', 'Every Man His Own Bricklayer', and 'Electricity for Beginners'." From some books which he found, he is able to think ahead and realise how a windmill could benefit the farm. A leader with this foresight is excellent. He is able to anticipate of the problems to come. Furthermore, Napoleon is an immature person. . "He walked heavily round the shed, looked closely at every detail of the plans and snuffed at them once or twice, then stood for a little while contemplating them out of the corner of his eye; then suddenly he lifted his leg, urinated over the plans, and walked out without uttering a word." This shows that Napoleon is showing his disapproval in a very immature way by messing the project up when he could be the bigger person and talk it out. Thus, i believe Snowball is more effective as a leader.

I would choose snowball as the more effective leader. This is because snowball thinks of the well being of every animal in Animal Farm whereas Napoleon only wants power. Snowball initially wanted to build a windmill to reduce the workload on the animals, another point is that Snowball puts in the effort to read all the books and see how he can improve animal farm so the place is more enjoyable for everyone. Snowball also evenly distributes the workload so no animal has a job too taxing by figuring out which animals are good at what jobs before assigning them to places that may not be their expertise, reducing the effiecency , hence emphasises my point on Snowball thinking for the well being of other animals. Snowball also shows a lot of dedication for the work he has done and obey buy the rules despite being the leader. WHereas Napoleon is selfish and only cares about his own needs. In the text it states that Napoleon changed the rules so he can benefit. He also stole Snowball's idea which Snowball had put in a lot of effort to find and think of and claimed that it was his own ideas. This proves that Napoleon is selfish and does things at the expense of others. Therefore, I think Snowball is the more effective leader.

He also follows the rules and did not change any of it even though he was he leader in the farm.

Both Snowball and Napoleon exhibit leadership qualities, albeit with different approaches. Snowball is a visionary leader who is passionate about improving the animals' lives through education and infrastructure projects like the windmill. He is described as eloquent and inventive, coming up with new ideas to benefit the farm. On the other hand, Napoleon is depicted as a more ruthless and cunning leader who consolidates power through manipulation and force. He focuses on gaining control over resources and ensuring his authority remains unchallenged, even resorting to using the attack dogs to intimidate others. Snowball appears to have the animals' best interests at heart and promotes a more democratic approach in decision-making. Whereas, Napoleon's ability to maintain control and navigate threats may be seen as effective in ensuring stability, albeit at the cost of freedom and equality. Therefore, I believe that Snowball is a better leader, allowing the farm to continue improving with both freedom and equality for each and every one of them.

Whereas napoleon, a power hungry pig, used dogs to chase his competition out and wants all the power to himself, showing me that he is greedy and selfish

Between Snowball and Napoleon I find that Snowball is a much more effective as a leader as compared to Napoleon. This is because Snowball does not only think of the well being of himself but the well being of every animal on Animal Farm. On the other hand, Napoleon is much more self-centered and only thinks of his own well being. Just before Snowball was kicked out of the farm, he had made plans to build a windmill in the farm and this was suppose to help lighten the work load of the animals and even crafted a plan on how to build the windmill. Snowball spent days reading books to figure out how to draft a plan to build the windmill. However, Napoleon looked down on the idea of building the windmill and kicked snowball out of the farm. But after awhile Napoleon stole snowballs plans and took it as his own without giving any credit to snowball when he proposed the plan to the other animals. Napoleon only did this so that it would make him look like he spent time and effort trying to help the animals but in reality this was only to make him look good and he did contribute to the plans at all. Hence i think snowball is a more effective leader

I find that Snowball is more effective as a leader than Napoleon. Snowball originally planned on building the windmill to lighten the load of the other animals so that they won’t have to work very hard. He also abides by the rules despite being a leader. Napoleon on the other hand is power hungry and selfish, only thinking about what’s best for him. He chased Snowball away and lied about it being his idea. Napoleon uses Squealer to brainwash the other animals into thinking that he is the better leader and changed the rules. He treated the animals unfairly and also used the dogs to threaten the other animals into submission. That’s why I think that Snowball is more effective as a leader.

This shows that napoleon has good leadership skills and has power and authority. This allows napoleon to be a suitable leader by ruling the farm with an iron fist. I do not think that snowball is a suitible leader. This is because, even though snowball is smart and a visionary pig, he does not have enough power to lead to farm and was easily taken out by napoleon. This is why i believe that napoleon is a more suitable leader than snowball.

I find that Snowball is more effective as a leader than Napoleon as Snowball cares more about Animal Farm and the animals living in Animal Farm and not about himself and the benefits he would receive. Unlike Snowball, Napoleon only cared about himself having the most amount of power in Animal Farm. Snowball is a visionary leader who made the animals educated and made the Seven Commandments for all the animals and didn't change them until he was chased out of Animal Farm indirectly by Napoleon. An example for how he cared for the animals living in Animal Farm was that he wanted to build a windmill to lessen the workload of the animals. Snowball is also hardworking and made sure the plans for the windmill were completed. However, Napoleon acted immature by urinating on Snowball's work on the windmill on the wall as he did not approve of it and he changed The Seven Commandments to his likings. He most only cared about himself and had never cared much about the other animals living in Animal Farm. Therefore, I think Snowball is a better leader than Napoleon.

Choosing the more effective leader definitely is no easy decision when it comes down to the two candidates, Napoleon and Snowball. Both of them exhibit ideal qualities that leaders have, with opposite ways of controlling the animals.

Napoleon is a ruthless and calculating leader, sparing no mercy when it comes to making his moves in controlling the farm. He is manipulative and cruel, using propaganda to manipulate the other animals into believing into his ideal beliefs for the farm. Napoleon is cruel for finding ways to get Snowball out of the farm-removing his competition for full dictatorship (Hence giving him full dictatorship of Animal Farm). His way of leading may come off as cruel or cunning, as he instills fear in the other animals hearts to get his way, and to stabilise his position as the Leader of the farm, which definitely is a smart way to control the animals.Napoleons leadership type is that of the Dominant type. People with Dominant leading styles tend to be controlling, harsh and uncompromising, wanting their way to be followed. They also can get the respect of other people with their strong backing stability(where there are loyal supporters backing their choices/decisions)Notable figures like Napoleon are like Kim Jong Un and Xi Jinping. Dominant leadership styles can stabilise one’s leadership position and can come off as effective , but however, I definitely think there are better ways to lead. Therefore, I think Napoleon is not the more effective leader as he is more self centered, with little to no thought for the people in the farm.

On the other hand, our second candidate, Snowball definitely also is an effective leader. His Eloquence,Determination and Charisma are also qualities which Natural born leaders have-as well as a strong desire to improve the conditions of people in the territory they are leading. We can see that Snowball has a flair for public speaking, charming listeners with his ambitious ideas to make the farm a better place for his fellow animals and gaining more loyal supporters,( for example the windmill project). Snowball must have put himself in the animals shoes, showing his empathy to be able to feel for the animals and wanting to improve conditions for the animals, something which I doubt Napoleon would do. Snowball has a conscientious leading style. People with Conscientious leading styles tend to be diligent and duitiful, with sharp attention to detail and follow the thinking of “we>me”(Napoleon does not think like that also!). They usually want the best for the people they lead and are passionate about what they’re doing. Snowball is indeed passionate to improve the conditions for the farm, as he put in so much effort to plan out the windmill-from reading books and making plans, it shows his commitment and willingness to take time to plan for easier workloads for his fellow animals, showing his empathy. He is also an effective leader as people would feel convinced and confident when listening to his plans,as they are charmed by his works and admire his passion. Notable figures with the same leadership style as Snowball are Lee Kuan Yew,where he has Natural leadership skills to lead and charm crowds, and they work hard to get greater conditions for the people around them, and to me, can evoke greater respect than the leaders with Dominant Leading styles. Therefore, I feel that Snowball is a very effective leader as he has very strong leadership qualities like empathy, diligence, determination and charm. These qualities are rare to find in leaders and leaders with these qualities are rare to find

To summarise it all up, I feel that Snowball is a more effective leader as he can gain respect, loyalty and admiration from his fellow animals in the long run, whilst being empathetic to make the farm a better place for the animals, while Napoleons harsh and manipulative ways can stabilise his position. However if Napoleon and Snowballs effectiveness as a leader were to be compared, Snowball would have a higher hand.

His plans for the windmill, though controversial, show his commitment to improving the farm's infrastructure and productivity. He also tends to be more democratic and consultative. He values the input of other animals and is more transparent in his dealings. While Napoleon is more strategic and cunning. He focuses on consolidating power and eliminating threats to his authority. His removal of Snowball demonstrates his willingness to take drastic measures to secure his position. He also uses propaganda and fear to control the animals, employing Squealer to spread misinformation and justify his actions. His approach ensures loyalty through manipulation rather than genuine inspiration.

Shock and horror filled my body like wildfire. There's no way our comrades would do something like that, right? Why would they betray all of us? Napoleon had executed them on the spot! How are there more confessions? I thought we, as animals of Animal Farm, should stay united together than betraying each other? What do you mean Snowball appeared to you in a dream? Is that not ridiculous? Oh. They're dead too. But how are there so many animals who dared listen to Snowball and obey his commands? It seems like an endless line of comrades - no, animals - that seem to have went against Napoleon's order, now dead, executed by Napoleon's fierce and terrifying dogs. The sudden stench of dried blood and dead animals struck me, and I was deeply disgusted. This awful stench had not been around since the reign of Jones', and it is awfully unfamiliar now. I am now extremely disturbed. One part of me agrees that Napoleon killing all the traitors is right, but the other part of me thinks that executing them was wrong. But then, as Boxer says, "Comrade Napoleon is always right."

At least that was what Napoleon told us.However,it was he who had executed the guilty animals for their crimes.Honestly,I was horrified at the scene. The was a pile of corpses, and the air was heavy with the smell of blood.I feel that the animals were wrong to betray us,but at the same time,it felt very wrong to execute them. But I should not think that way.Napoleon is our leader and he is never wrong.I believe there was some reason why he hed to kill the guilty animals.

The air is thick with fear, and my heart pounds as I watch one animal after another step forward, their voices trembling as they confess to their crimes. The once hopeful dream of a fair and just society is crumbling before my eyes, replaced by a nightmare where loyalty is repaid with death. I feel powerless, trapped in a world where the promise of freedom has become a tool of oppression. Each execution is a reminder that we are no longer safe, that the very leaders who once inspired us have become our greatest threat.

the strong, coppery smell of fresh blood filled the air in the mellow yard where we all stood.I slowly turned my head to observe the horrifying and depressing scene that is currently taking place, with the blood stains of the animals that had just gotten executed staining the ground that we all stood at. Executed? For crimes which sounded absolutely absurd to commit! Snowball was obviously gone and there was no way he would have been able to converse with those animals! My body trembled and quivered, in shock of the brutality of the situation. No way…no way that our fellow comrades would betray us like that! This is absurd! Just then, Comrade Napoleon said, in a mellow, cold voice, “Confess.Come forward and admit your foolish and cowardly actions. If we find out that any one of you fellow animals are lying about being innocent about betraying the farm, you will get worser consequences.” He glared hard at the area where I stood, which undoubtedly contributed more fear in my mind although I was innocent. Just then, Daisy, a mere foal who I was rather close with due to the closeness of our resting quarters slowly walked forward, alongside with 3 other foals following suit. My face widened with horror as I stared at her melancholic face walking towards Comrade Napoleon, seemingly aware of her fate. I tried to grab her still,as I was aware that she did not do anything that would have been regarded as “treason” towards this farm but was stopped by a fellow pig. Tears filled my eyes as she stated the crime which she had supposedly committed.Without wasting another second, the dogs brutally tore her throat out, spitting her blood out onto the ground. I turned around, unwilling to witness the horrific sight of a fellow friends dead body.Poor foal…she was just a foal, deprived of her chance of growing up in our Animal Farm, a utopia to be in the future. There lies her still, cold body lying on the ground. The confessions continued, with more and more executions which got more brutal by the time, with some animals fainting out of sheer fear from seeing their fellow comrades ruthlessly getting executed. The sight of the corpses, alongside with the stench of the blood, with the mellow, cold environment of that depressing November afternoon left a lasting impression on me was a cruel souvenir to me.one which I could never remove.one which I could never forget and would have to live with forever . One which cost the lives of our fellow comrades on that mellow November afternoon.

Why would they betray all of us like this, to know that Napoleon was this ruthless. What gave them the guts to go against him? I was stuck rooted to the ground, heart pounding anxiously even if they had betrayed us they did not deserve to have to pay for their mistakes with their lives! Those ferocious dogs waiting to shred them to bits mercilessly, tears streamed down my cheeks, as much as they are traitors they were still my dear friends to see them have to come to their end like this breaks every part of my soul. Soon, pools of crimson stained the ground, spattered with blood, as though the walls had been painted in red. Shaken to the core, I had no clue what to do next wether to cry wether to walk away, all that I could manage was to stand there as my body gets engulfed in sorrow. For something they did not do and was only owning up to having thought about doing that, death was too harsh of a punishment for them. Now everytime I rest my eyes, the scene replayed in my mind, this stuck with me it was something that I could not shake away.

this is preposterous....why would napoleon do such an absurd thing.... I cannot unsee what I saw on that day. my comrades ruthlessly executed on the spot for things that they never even committed. It was an awful and gory scene, which still traumatizes me to this day. I was left speechless for the days that followed, silently sobbing every night knowing that my comrades were wrongly killed. For all i know, I could've very well been one of the animals who where executed on that day. in my opinion, i think that napoleon is a cold hearted killer. but he managed to manipulate all the animals somehow nevertheless--even having some animals support him.

The cold, ruthless gaze of Napoleon, the snarling dogs ready to pounce, and the bloodied bodies of those who once stood beside me in our fight for freedom make me question everything we’ve worked for. How did it come to this?

How are there so many comrades who have betrayed us, and i thought no animal shall kill each other? although they have betrayed us, no animal should be executed for that. the image of my comrades slowly being shredded to pieces by napoleon's dogs will forever be imprinted in my mind. I can only hope that there are no more animals who have betrayed napoleon to ensure that these executions stop for the sake of all of us.

Standing there, the view of my precious friends torn apart by many big ferocious dogs had me traumatised. This is extremely outrageous! How could Napoleon execute them on the spot! Right in front of all of our eyes! Those were our comrades, our family. I feel so betrayed by napoleon. They were only trying to be honest and come clean, hoping to be forgiven. Despite the apologies , none of them were spared, all killed on the spot and without a second thought. The more I looked and thought about it, the more I became sick to the stomach. Is Napoleon really doing what is best for us and our farm? Yes, we cannot hide the fact that they were traitors, but weren't they comrades just a few days ago?

I'm speechless. There is really nothing I can do. Even when Snowball was chased out by the nine enormous dogs, I knew Napoleon was the one who planned to do and even framed him of many things. Now as Napoleon has the most amount of power, there is no equality among the animals especially when the pigs judge the animals who are dumber than them just because they are "deemed" to have the most amount of powers. I want to tell my fellow animal friends about their devious selfish plans and crimes, but I know that they would not trust me and Squealer and Napoleon with his nine enormous dogs will manipulate the animals and together with them, will chase me out of Animal Farm. I just hope these can all be fixed and Snowball will return with determination to fix Animal Farm.

This was something really unexpected. I have so many questions yet I am unable to ask them out loud. Why did Napoleon execute innocent lives? What did they do wrong? Why did the animals confess to crimes when they did not even commit them at all? I thought that we were supposed to be united and harmonious. How did all this change so quickly? I am afraid that I would be executed next. I absolutely do not believe that our comrades have betrayed us. There must be some misunderstanding. There is no way that our comrades would betray Animal Farm, and I know that they are innocent. However, these executions still left me with terror and I am scared yet confused about what had happened.

I wasn't even aware of any of my fellow animals committing such crimes! I guess I was wrong, and my friends were criminals. Now there is a pile of corpses on the floor, lying in a pool of blood. Faces of animals I once knew, now lifeless. No mercy for them, no mercy for us, as we had to witness such bloodshed. Is this what we wanted when Napoleon rose to power? Is this what we wanted, to live in fear of having our lives ripped from us by growling, sharp-toothed dogs... Animal farm, Animal farm, what has become of you?

He is described as eloquent and inventive, producing innovative ideas to benefit the farm.

On the other hand, Napoleon is depicted as a more ruthless and cunning leader who consolidates power through manipulation and force. He focuses on gaining control over resources and ensuring his authority remains unchallenged, even resorting to using the attack dogs to intimidate others. Snowball has the animals' best interests at heart and promotes a more democratic approach in decision-making. "its notorious whiff of decay, the bankside scum and lighter congestion...", compared with "Now the city’s heart pours its cleaner, greener waters" shows the drastic difference before and after the river was cleaned, using vivid imagery. Before the river was clean, the quote "its notorious whiff of decay, the bankside scum and lighter congestion..." shows how dirty and smelly the water was. Now, it is cleaner than ever. This shows that the process of cleaning up the river was a success.

(original)

I find the descriptions of the Singapore River and The Clean Rivers Campaign interesting as the descriptions of them are being compared to examples that make it more clear for us to understand and interesting. The Clean Rivers Campaign is compared to a surgery and how people in The Clean Rivers Campaign cleaning up the river is compared to surgeons. In the poem, it states that, "as if the surgeon had cut open the belly to find the cancer spread through the body" and this tells that the litter and pollution in the river were so serious that there were so many problems as it is compared to "the cancer spread through the body" and we would know how serious cancer is. These problems are considered troublesome for the writer and the people in his campaign. The literary device used here is metaphor.

I find the description of the before and after of the Singapore river makes the poet interesting as it shows how Singapore was in the past and how it look like now. " Its notorious whiff of decay, the bankside scum and lighter congestion." compared to " Now, the city's heart pours its cleaner, greener waters." This tells me about the huge change is the river over the years. The first quote allows me to imagine how dirt and smelly the river was, and the second quote let me to imagine how clean the river is now. From this 2 quotes, it shows the process of the river being cleaned up and that cleaning up the Singapore river was a huge success.

I find the poet's descriptions of the Singapore river intriguing, since there is clear contrast between the before and after image of the Singapore river. "We lived with it for years, you see, the notorious whiff of decay, the bankside scum and lighter congestion" shows how the Singapore River was like before the Clean Rivers campaign. It paints a picture of how dirty the river was and how bad the stench would be. But when the river was successfully cleaned, it states "Now the city pours its cleaner greener waters through a body working ever harder." But the results were ironic, as the poet writes "Farewell, Bugis street, goodbye, Chinatown. Relocate the bumboats to Pasir Panjang. Resettle hawkers, close down the pig farms, rehouse squatters far from their communities. These were the costs we couldn't count." Despite the river being clean, with the green waters flowing as a leisurely environment, many things that built the old Singapore were removed and replaced. The 'soul' refers to all those things - the bumboats, the hawkers, the pig farms. Chinatown, Bugis street. All these things. The 'soul' of the Singapore river was the valuable thing lost, it refers to all the things they had to get rid of during the Clean Rivers Campaign. "Now the city’s heart pours its cleaner, greener waters through a body working ever harder,

transformed in the 90’s into – well, a human, leisure-friendly river environment,

yet incomplete." This shows that despite the success of the campaign, the river is incomplete. The things lost were what some of the residents called 'home'. Now it isn't there anymore, and it left a gap that cannot be filled.

The literary technique here is a metaphor.

I find the descriptions which the writers use to describe of contrast of the before and after the clean rivers campaign interesting, as it emphasises the transformation from the past to the present state of the Singapore River. In poem it states, “its notorious whiff of decay, the bankside scum and lighter congestion, the quaint unloading of the boats.” This emphasises the horrible state of the Singapore River back then, and the severity of the pollution in the river and it convinces the reader to feel disgust and hope for a change in the river, which was to be achieved in the clean rivers campaign. “Now the city’s heart pours its cleaner, greener waters through a body working ever as harder, transformed in the 90’s into-well a human,leisure-friendly river environment yet incomplete”. This shows the contrast from the previous evidence, which showed the reader the polluted state of the Singapore river, and now it is contrasted with this current quote, which describes the clean state of the river, fulfilling what the Clean rivers campaign was set up for in the first place, as it is cleaner and less polluted, proving its success .However, the irony in the poem is that “The rivers renewal made the body whole but in the process we misplaced it’s soul”. Usually, when one describes a successful operation, there would not be that much of a downside, as now it is shown that there was a irreversible problem which the writer used to make an impact on the reader, as we can not make up for the culture, heritage that was lost in the tedious process of cleaning the river, leaving only the nostalgia by remembering the lively memories which took place there in the past to those who’ve experienced it.

The description about the changes of the Singapore River is interesting in showing me that the quality of the dirty river was filled with such a large amount of rubbish that it had to be described as "cancer spreading throughout the patient's body". This tells me that the river was extremely dirty and in a horrible state. However, in the poem, it states, "fresh blood flows in old veins", which shows the drastic change that the Singapore River had, and shows how new and clean the quality of the river is now.

The writer compares the clean up to a surgery, which is a unique metaphor to use, as most people wouldn't associate the clean up of the Singapore river to a surgical procedure.

When its an option well, that takes some thinking, doesnt it?" this tells me that the poet uses a metaphor to show that the clean river campaign is compared to a surgery, the surgeon is compared to the cleanup of the river and the cancer spreading through the body is compared to litter and pollution in the river. hence,The poet is saying that the cleanup of the river is urgent
