1) The macroeconomic situation affects companies' revenue, number of orders, equipment prices, employees' attitude, currency in which the payments occur.
2) With macroeconomic growth, more goods are there to be transported, which allows the new players to come into the game. Also, with this growth, the government or private entities might be interested in developing the infrastructure or changing the tax regime. With economic downfall, the opposite occurs: the non-sustainable companies go away, the infrastructure gets neglected.
