This shows that Lennie was brave and able to stand up for himself, and he was always brave all along, he just did not know what to do until George came along and helped him find his way. "He stood up and walked dangerously towards Crooks. "Who hurt George?" He demanded. Crooks saw the danger as it approached him. He edged back on his bunk to get out of the way. "I was just supposing," he said. "George ain't hurt. He's all right. He'll be back all right." Lennie stood over him. "What you supposing for? Ain't nobody goin' to suppose no hurt to George." (Steinbeck, pg 72)

This is the saddest part of the story. George didn't want Lennie to suffer so he put him in a better place. That is a true friend.
