This book would be a perfect read for children who are in upper elementary school, or early middle school. In addition, this book would also be suitable for any child transitioning through the phases of a blended family, or adjusting to a step-parent. Lastly, this book would be most beneficial for children who have same-sex parents, and need a resource to relate to.

"My Mixed-Up Berry Blue Summer" follows the life of 12 year old June Ferrell. June lives in a small town on a lake with her mother, her soon-to-be stepmother, and a few friends. The book takes the reader through the struggles that June and her family face due to her parent's sexual orientation. June must find strength within herself to combat the hatred from the townspeople, salvage the little friendships she has left, and help keep her mother's suffering business afloat. In the midst of the stress, June begins to feel animosity toward herself for not having a father, and towards her parents for not being society conforming. With a turn of events, June realizes she has to fight for what's right to find her happiness, and live her truth. I personally really enjoyed this book because It sheds light on how today's society casts darkness on same-sex couples. I know this book is fictional, however, the harassment that June and her family faced in this book are already things this country is used to seeing plastered all over social media. It's upsetting because not only is the loving couple having to reap the "consequences" for their relationship, but the innocent child is as well. I have also never seen same-sex orientation mentioned in a children's book until I read this text. I have to say, It is truly interesting to experience life through their lenses. This book was a great read.

I could use this book to continue to preach to my students about how important it is to stand up for what you believe in. Especially if what you believe in causes no harm to anyone; you should be your biggest supporter.
