Why is Black History Month so important?

Us Americans celebrate Black History Month because African Americans have done so much. Black History Month helps us recognize people that have done so much for our country. Most of the things that have happened in history are still happening today. Black History Month was first celebrated in the week of February in 1926. Martin Luther King Jr. has the biggest impact for Black History Month because he made a speech he said "I have a Dream".

Thurgood Marshall

Thurgood Marshall had used the courts to fight Jim Crow and he dismantled segregation in the U.S. He is important to remember because he consistently supported rulings upholding a strong protection of individual rights and liberal interpretations of controversial social issues.

Louis Armstrong

Louis Armstrong started a jazz band with his friends. He was known for distinctive gravelly and voiced singing. He made an impact on the world because he developed the rhythmic language of swing and made it the foundation of jazz and popular music. He was a hero because he was the only Black jazz musician to publicly speak out against school segregation. He brought a huge impact during the Harlem Renaissance.

Jackie Robinson

Jackie Robinson was a baseball player. He had died from a heart attack. We celebrate Jackie Robinson because he had broken the color Barrie in baseball, becoming the first African- American player in the 20th century to take the field in American or National league. April 15th is the day where we celebrate Jackie Robinson for his life, values, and accomplishments. In 1947 he had broken baseballs 'colour line' he was named National League Rookie of the year. Jackie had fought for integrated education, voting rights, and fair housing. He had changed the world for many African American baseball players.

W.E.B. had frighten for African American rights. He had gotten a second bachelor's degree in 1891, and in 1895 he became the first African American to receive a PhD from Harvard University. He had taught Wilberforce University, the University of Pennsylvania. He had published his first important study in 1899. It was titled "The Philadelphia Negro". He had became involved in the Pan-African Movement. It was a movement that had encouraged solitary for Africans around the world.

Aretha Franklin

We celebrate Aretha Franklin today because she was the first woman to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. She is so important because in the 1960s the world had come to know and love Aretha as the " Queen of Soul Music". Her recording "Respect" had become an anthem of the civil rights struggle. She had become a symbol of strength and pride for Black women during the Civil Rights Movement.

George W. Carver
