While development (improving people's lives!) can occur to a limited extent without growth, in the long-term, development needs economic growth. On the other hand, growth can sometimes hurt prevent or minimize development.

In the space below, find FIVE powerful and relevant images that illustrate growth at the expense of development. You should have one image representing each of the negative effects of economic growth as outlined in section 4.1.3 in Kognity.

As Mexico continues to adjust water policies around the nation, some towns and regions have been left forgotten. This illustrates how resources of the government are unevenly distributed among the population. The picture below shows a community in mexico being flooded.

In this case income coming from increased rGDP has been wrongly distributed and only benefited a few percentage of the population and not increasing the general standard of living of the entire.

This image illustrates China’s investment on new technologies, which helped them achieve rapid growth. They invested on new technologies rather that in consumer goods and services, which do not necessarily improve the standard of living of households. Where a lot were private investments who only benefit a few although it accounted for about 50% of China’s GDP.

Brazil’s regulation and tax system is not the most effective. When there are increases in GDP that should help for healthcare systems and education, a lot of money is lost due to very high levels of corruption instead of using the money for the social wellbeing. This means that although there is economic growth, well being or economic development is very little or none.
