Mississippi State History

https://www.infoplease.com/us/states/mississippi

First explored for Spain by Hernando de Soto, who discovered the Mississippi River in 1540, the region was later claimed by France. In 1699, a French group under Sierra d’Iberville stablished the first permanent settlement near present-day Ocean Springs.

Great Britain took over the area in 1763 after the French and Indian Wars, ceding it to the U.S. in 1783 after the Revolution. Spain did not relinquish its claims until 1798, and in 1810 the U.S. annexed West Florida from Spain, including what is now southern Mississippi. Mississippi joined the Union as the 20th state in 1817 and gets its name from the Mississippi River, which forms its western border

Mississippi was one of the largest slave states in the country, building up most of its economy around plantation agriculture. The Civil War disrupted the profitable (for slaveowners) economy, and much of the economic growth after the War is attributable to freed slaves who cleared land for farming and development. They were able to work to ownership of the land, and at its peak a majority of farms were owned by black farmers. However, natural challenges, falling cotton prices, and racial enmity led to many of those farmers losing their farms by the 1930s and 1940s. The economic disparities and challenges in Mississippi contributed to making the state a hotbed of activity during the civil rights movement. Most famously, Mississippi saw the assassinations of Medgar Evers (civil rights activist and field secretary for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People(NAACP)) and Emmet Till (black 14 year old teenager).

For a little more than one hundred years, from shortly after the state's founding through the Great Depression, cotton was the undisputed king of Mississippi's largely agrarian economy. Today, agriculture continues as a major segment of the state's economy. For almost four decades soybeans occupied the most acreage, while cotton remained the largest cash crop. In 2001, however, more acres of cotton were planted than soybeans, and Mississippi jumped to second in the nation in cotton production (exceeded only by Texas).

On Aug. 29, 2005, Mississippi was hit by Hurricane Katrina, killing hundreds, mostly in Harrison County.

Culture
Mississippi is a Native American build culture in the areas what now is Midwestern, Eastern and Southeastern United States.
The culture developed from the Mississippi river and started with the Native Americans, featuring a lot of temples, villages and cities of the
South Appalachian Mississippian, the
Caddoan Mississippian and the
Plaquemine Mississippian.
Impressive are various stone made sculptures and burial traditions which are shown in museums.
For example a reconstruction of the birdman burial at Cahokia.

Politics
Power in Mississippi's government is distributed by the state’s constitution between the executive and legislative branches and has 82 Counties.
The state’s current Governor is Tate Reeves, a member of the Republican party.
The Federal Representation of Mississippi counts two seats in the U.S. Senate, both owned by Republicans.
Fact is, that Mississippi has one of the least progressive records on LGBT rights of any state. Consensual same sex relations were illegal in Mississippi until Lawrence v. Texas struck down all state anti-sodomy laws in 2003. Same-sex marriage had been banned in Mississippi by executive order in 1996, and state statute since 1997.

Also, between the Reconstruction era, when blacks constituted a majority and elected many representatives to local and state office, and since the 1960s, Mississippi has elected more African-American officials (including local offices) than any other state in the United States as well as it has been tried to retire the official flag of Mississippi.

With this in mind, we can see that Mississippi is one of the most controversial states of the U.S.

Sources: Wikipedia
