Authoritarian. It sounds awful, but maybe it’s because most of my “leadership experience” has been leading my classroom staff, and often the feedback I get is to just be clear and direct. I think especially when working in SpEd, sometimes that black & white directness is needed.

Leadership is dynamic. It requires a keen sense of observation to see the trends that are taking place in your work place. It knows when to step in to be more hands-on and knows when to withdraw so that people can take ownership of what they do.

Leaders should always set the example and motivate those around them to achieve their full potential. They should always have troop welfare and mission accomplishment in mind to have a balance as one is dependent on the other for the organization should be successful.

My leadership style is a mix of all styles. I feel like depending on the situation I would change my style. For example, in the classroom I love to have clear rules and a vision for my students, which makes me an authoritarian. However, I feel I would be a democratic leader at times because of the fact that I want to treat everyone with respect and hear different perspectives before making a decision. Lastly, I can be a laissez-faire type leadership because I would like to see people step up in situations.

My personal philosophy on leadership is to champion integrity, empathy and create a space for collaboration. I would like to be approachable and have a laissez approach, but be democratic when needed.

From the three philosophies in the chapter, I relate more to the Democratic philosophy. At times maybe I’m overly democratic because I want to give everyone a voice. It’s more time consuming but worth it because there is more buy-in once decisions are made.
