I understand that we are in the midst of a two-year long pandemic, but I don’t see society feeling sorry for these young adults once they leave school. I fear what will become of these students who are awarded for merely “showing up” now, and I worry about how that will impact our society as a whole in the future.

We are consistently asked to give grace to students, but routinely denied that same grace.

I have a small but significant number of students who appear to have no desire to be successful. My parent contacts go unanswered and student conversations end with thank you from the students and no later follow through.

This year more than ever, it seems students have an apathy toward growth and work. They seem unresponsive toward clearly stated goals and often ask, "Why does this matter?" Or, they say, "Yeah, I already know about this, and I don't really care." I don't know if it's the pandemic or what, but so far, they are just surviving. To be honest, I feel that way myself sometimes!

While I do not experience many discipline issues within the four walls of my classroom, I am noticing extreme disrepect toward teachers in the hallways. Many students just roam around the halls instead of actually going where they should be. When I have asked students where they should be, I receive the following responses: completly ignore that I just spoke to them, blank stares, cursing/yelling, walking away, etc.

Students, in general, seem to be getting away with a lot more bad behavior than pre-pandemic. I've literally overheard students coaching each other on how to get out of trouble. I've heard them tell each other, "As soon as you do something wrong, go to your counselor or principal before the teacher gets a chance to. Then tell them how you're super stressed or your anxiety is really bad. They don't punish you then."

I truly makes me sad that students are doing this AND getting away with it.
