3 Different Ways to Advocate for Students of Color, ELL students, and Poor students.

By: Taylor Oliver
1. Students of color struggle in the American school system for a number of different reasons, whether it be from socioeconomic factors or discrimination. However, I think one of the main causes is the lack of teacher diversity. The teaching population does not reflect the growing and diverse student population in America. One way that we can help our students of color is for us to advocate for a more diverse teacher population by going to rallys, etc.
Here is a good Youtube video that talks a bit about this issue: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K2658IoJVxQ
2. Although the population in America is becoming more and more diverse every single day with students, whose first language is not English, there are not enough teachers, who know how to effectively teach these students. One way that we can advocate or help our ELL students is to encourage other teachers to use effective ELL learning strategies in the classroom, like using pictures with instruction, etc.
Here is a good video that I watched on this subject: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-bWU238PymM
3. For decades now, children in poverty (usually students of color) have been receiving a lower quality education. Everyone likes to say that there is an "achievement gap" between different groups of students in America. However, this is not really an achievement gap. It is more like an education debt. Students in poverty do worse than other students in other schools because there is not adequate funding and resources for students in poverty stricken school districts. To help our lower income students, we must advocate for change. We must advocate for equal funding and resources.
Here is a good video that I found on Youtube about this subject matter. It is a TED talk too. I hope you enjoy it!
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7O7BMa9XGXE

Some teachers think that it's okay they will eventually get it but instead of actually helping ELL they just give them busy work. Also you can notice in the comic as the teacher is telling him these things his head is going down, even though he isn't able to response he understands what she is telling him. Sadly some teachers do think that because a student is a ELL that they don't know any Spanish at all and that is completely untrue. Teachers should adjust as needed to their specific students needs.

-Hilarie Bravo

This article talks about how students are being treated differently and not getting the same education just because they are not the same gener/race. It talks about how these students want their college applications being looked at genderless just because they want to be admitted or declined from their work not because of their gender or race. This is imporatant because education shouldn't be based on someone's race or gender; they should all get the same education no matter what.
-Amber Acosta
