THE idea of a merger initially only involved Malaya and Singapore in 1959 and not the Borneo territories, says former Finance Minister Tengku Razaleigh Hamzah.

However, he said, first Prime Minister Tunku Abdul Rahman rejected the idea for two reasons – the growing communist influence in Southeast Asia which was also infiltrating Singapore through its ruling People’s Action Party (PAP) led by Lee Kuan Yew. “Tunku was concerned that if merged, the communist influence spreading in Singapore would spill over to Malaya,” Razaleigh said in his memoirs launched recently.

Secondly, merger with Singapore was seen as potentially causing social problems given the large Chinese population in Singapore that could undermine the slim Malay majority at that time.

Lee Kuan Yew made this message which is catered to the citizens of Singapore. The message is to encourage Lee Yuan yews voyage to merge with Malaya. The message implies that Without Malaya, Singapore's Economic position would soon falter due to the circumstance's of not having resources as a small country. Source A states, "Without merger … and an integration of our two economies, our economic position will slowly and steadily get worse. Your livelihood will get worse" This explains that without Malaysia's economy to support Singapore's economy, Even the livelihood/lives of Singaporean citizens will slowly deteriorate due to Singapore's limited resources. Source A also states, "It is the hinterland which produces rubber and tin and that keeps our shop‑window economy going" This hints that Malaysia holds many extremely valuable resources which Singapore is in deeply need of as these resources are on high demand from Singapore as well. Thus, Lee Kuan Yew made this speech to encourage Singaporeans to join him in merging with Malaysia....

He mentions, "...the Federation is important to Singapore" - "It is the hinterland which produces rubber and tin that keeps our shop-window economy going" and "Without merger ... and an integration of our two economies, our economic position will slowly and steadily get worse". This is connected to his support of the merger as well as what could happen if the merger failed to happen in, "Your livelihood will get worse".
