Focusing on describing what part of the body is actually moving and the coordination process the body goes through in order to make a dance move. It also focusses on the quality of the movements being done and how energy can be utilised to help convey messages. The Laban Movement analysis helps children break down complex movements into adaptable pieces. This activity can be suitable for all students all ages and abilities. Posters that demonstrate the 4 areas of the Laban movement analysis can be presented to the students.

Use Line-dancing as an introduction to the art of social dancing. Line dancing is a sequence of repetitive moves and routines and can be done without a partner. When children begin to learn line dancing, they are able to dance in their own space and repeat moves until they feel comfortable joining in with a group. Students also have the freedom to work at their own pace and to even create their own line dances to ensure they are able to complete the moves within that sequence of steps.

Victorian Department of Education.

This is an activity that uses cards to initiate a pose that is representative of a feeling or situation. This is a great tool to help children begin to understand how emotions can influence body language and character experiences/development. This activity helps young students learn to be expressive using their physical bodies instead of using movement or verbal cues. Students can also have input into what emotions can go onto the cards and even broaden their horizons with this activity as they become more confident and comfortable with it.

Drama Trunk.

These rocks or stones picture different types of characters on them or could represent a setting, an item or an event. Students use these stones to help create a small story based on the stones they put together. These stones work to help inspire hand on play activities and storytelling within drama. These stones help students to create without fear of being wrong as these stones can be interpreted differently depending on the student and their context. Students can also have a say to what goes on the stones (could use paper if stones are not available).

Dinham, J. (2019). Delivering authentic arts education.

This resource allows children to think about what goes into making a story and breaking it down into smaller components. It engages students into the world of storytelling in drama and combines elements from of drama and movement. Get students to think about the location or setting of the story and what kind of characters exist in that world. This activity allows students to participate in the process of arts making and allows then to visualize drama as a narrative. Students can be encouraged to add in elements that reflect their cultures and can be adapted to reflect students of all abilities. For example, as a class come up with an imaginary place and think about who would live there and what would exist within that world.

Dinham, J.
