I think this means that Tolkien used symbols and characters to subtlety hint God and his grace. This observation captures the essence of the Catholic Imagination because people can subtlety reference God and his grace through anything they do or create, just like Tolkien did.

Catholics know that everyone sins, and that sin leads us father away from God and his light. So in this way, sin deprives us from God and his goodness, or "it takes away the necessity" that God is. This does not mean that sin depraves us. Depraving makes people morally wicked or corrupt, and sin does not do this unless we allow it too. So as Catholics, we believe that sinning deprives us from God, but does not corrupt us from God's goodness unless we allow it to and reject God's calling.

The biggest and most prominent symbol in the LOTR is the symbol of the ring which stands for sin and temptation away from God and his Goodness. In the movie it tempts those who have it to keep it to themselves and even kill those who attempt to take it away from them. This refers to the way sin makes us turn away from God and those around us to do bad things. Another symbol in LOTR is Gollum, which is the symbol of something evil turning good through God's work. In the movie Gollum is represented a lot of the time as evil or Frodo and his company's enemy, but in the end its through Gollum's act that the ring is ultimately destroyed. This points to the aspect of Catholicism that we believe God can turn the instruments of sin or evil into something good for his plan for salvation. The Ranger, Gandalf, and Frodo are also all symbols that represent Priest, Prophet, and King. In the movie, each character represents one of these things, and it shows how they live each one through by their actions and "deaths" throughout the story. This obviously alludes to the aspect that everyone is called to live Priest, Prophet, and King in their lives through Baptism.

The feast of the Queenship of Mary comes from a story in the book of Revelation. In it Mary is portrayed as a pregnant women wearing a crown of 12 stars. Once she gives birth, a dragon comes along to devour the child, which prompts a battle between the angels. This allows us to view Mary not in a sentimental way, but associated with a great cosmic struggle between Good and Evil.
