In the movie it tempts those who have it to keep it to themselves and even kill those who attempt to take it away from them. This refers to the way sin makes us turn away from God and those around us to do bad things. Another symbol in LOTR is Gollum, which is the symbol of something evil turning good through God's work. In the movie Gollum is represented a lot of the time as evil or Frodo and his company's enemy, but in the end its through Gollum's act that the ring is ultimately destroyed. This points to the aspect of Catholicism that we believe God can turn the instruments of sin or evil into something good for his plan for salvation. The Ranger, Gandalf, and Frodo are also all symbols that represent Priest, Prophet, and King. In the movie, each character represents one of these things, and it shows how they live each one through by their actions and "deaths" throughout the story.
