The Great Peruvian Earthquake hit the coastal town of Chimbote, Peru on May 31, 1970. It measured a 7.9 magnitude on the Richter scale and was listed in the top 10 for deadliest and most dangerous earthquakes of all time. 
There were landslides with debris traveling up to 200 mph down the sides of the Navado Huascaran mountain, destroying whole villages.
