John continually questions the significance of the poppet.

Why should this extract be chosen?

This extract features a scene in Proctor’s home, whereby the accusation of witchcraft points to Elizabeth Proctor. This scene exemplifies how the scapegoating of individuals for witchcraft in the midst of hysteria in Salem ensued.

The needle and the poppet are imperative symbols Miller employs so as to present a manifestation of blame and accusations, in which those symbols lie in the centre of the conflict.

The conflict of the situation is elucidated in this scene so as to be aggravated, as Proctor questions Hale’s and Cheever’s authority and his formulated seeking of charges against Elizabeth whilst Proctor attempts to vindicate her wife by accusing Warren.

Similes, symbolism and repetition are used.
